Applications open for Master Recyler program
Lane County Waste Man-
agement Division is offer-
ing a free course this winter
that provides comprehensive
training on local solid waste
issues. Hear from local ex-
perts, tour local facilities and
learn why things are (or are
not) recyclable.
The Waste Management
Division hosts this course
to help Lane County res-
idents and businesses re-
duce, reuse, recycle and re-
think waste habits.
Winter classes will be
held on Tuesdays from 5:30
to 8:30 p.m., Jan. 8 through
March 5, 2019, at Lane
Community College’s Flor-
ence Center, 3149 Oak St.
Applications are available
at

masterrecyclers or by call-
ing 541-682-2059. Com-
pleted applications may be
submitted by fax, email or
regular mail.
Retirees, folks new to
the area, teachers, green
job seekers, parents, high
school and college stu-
dents studying sustainabil-
ity, business owners and
employees tasked with re-
ducing solid waste in the
workplace all find common
purpose in the Master Re-
cycler community.
“The Master Recycler
program provides valuable
and necessary waste reduc-

struction: nine consecutive

Saturday compost demon-
stration and two Saturday
multi-site field trips to area
solid waste and recycling
sites.
Instructors are local ex-
perts in solid waste from
business, government and
non-profit sectors.
The course is free for
those who volunteer 30
hours to educate and assist
their communi-ties in the
year following the training.

Apply now for Western Lane Community Foundation grants
In this time of Thanksgiving, West-
ern Lane Community Foundation
(WLCF) is very thankful to offer the
2019 grant cycle to eligible applicants.
Each year, WLCF awards sever-
al grants to local nonprofit organi-
zations for projects/programs in its
target area of Western Lane County.
Grants are awarded in the areas of
education, medicine and science, the
arts and social and civic services.
In 2018, over $73,000 was awarded
to several of these worthy causes. The
annual amount to be awarded is de-
termined by the performance of the
invested portfolio of discretionary
funds during the current year.
Grant requests for the 2019 grant
the request for funds. Grants will be
selected in February and then award-
ed in late March.
Selected grant recipients will be
required to submit a grant report by
Aug. 31, 2019.
Grant requests and awards will be
selected based on merit, need, and
benefit to the community at large.
Grant requests and award amounts
vary greatly, but are usually between
$100 and $5,000, depending on the
nature of the grant project and funds
available for distribution.

BLM, Siuslaw Watershed to host forest management meeting
The Siuslaw Field Of-
fice of the Bureau of Land
Management is partnering
with the Siuslaw Watershed
Council and the Big Bear
Camp in Walton, Ore.,
to host a public meeting
to discuss and receive
feedback on a forest man-
agement project for some
of their Late-Succession-
al Reserve and Riparian
Reserve lands north of
Highway 126 and through-
out the Siuslaw Water-
shed.
This meeting will be a
great place to learn more
about the groups’ guid-
ing forest management
plan and provide valuable
feedback about its pro-
posal, which includes thin-
ning and restoration activ-
ities in stands of trees and
adjacent streams on BLM
lands to support the resto-
ration of late-successional
complex stands spotted owl
habitat.
For anyone who wants to
have a voice in managing
public lands, this is a great
place to be.
People are invited to
attend the meeting on
shed Council.
The Siuslaw Watershed
Council, based in Maple-
ton, supports sound eco-
nomic, social and environ-
mental uses of natural and
human resources in the
Siuslaw River Basin.
The council encourages
cooperation among pub-
lic and private entities to
promote awareness and un-
derstanding of watershed
functions by adopting and
implementing a total wa-
tershed approach to natural
resource management and
production.

riod for this management
plan is set to begin on Dec.
3, allowing the public 30
days to comment.
