10A | SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2018 | SIUSLAW NEWS SEAcoast presents Ken Lavigne’s Christmas Roadshow Bell ringers kick off annual EAcoast Entertainment launches the Red Kettle Drive today S holiday season with Ken Lavigne on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Flor- ence Events Center. This concert will be the icing on the cake — or the star on the top of the tree — following the Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony in Historic Old Town Florence at 5:30 p.m. The Ken Lavigne Christmas Musi- cal Roadshow is an enchanting holiday musical tour through the golden age of radio. “I want this Christmas to feel like we’re shaking up the champagne bottle and popping the cork,” enthuses Lavigne. The desire to turn a concert into a celebration has evolved from the earli- est days of his Christmas performances, when he had to do much of the produc- tion and promotion on his own. “I had to do a mental trick and say to myself, this is a party you’re throwing and you’re just inviting people to come and be part of the fun.” Lavigne started his shining solo career in 2008. As an all-around entertainer he invites the audience into his life with his luscious, silken voice. He has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, toured across North Amer- ica, released three CDs and worked with such musical luminaries as David Foster. He loves sharing his stories in the Christmas spirit, which is all about joy. Tickets are on sale now at the Flor- ence Events Center Box Office or at Sea- coastea.org. Tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for students under the age of 18. Lavigne will give a preconcert talk at 6:15 p.m., following a special perfor- mance of holiday favorites during the Florence Holiday Festival and the light- ing of the Christmas Tree in Historic Old Town Florence at 5:30 p.m. This tree lighting event is sponsored by the City of Florence and Florence Area Chamber of Commerce and is free to the community. Seacoast Entertainment Association is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which has been bringing entertainment to the Oregon Coast since 1980. FRAA artist Don Mathis exhibits at OPB in November at Backstreet Gallery on Bay Street, as well as FRAA Art Center and Gallery on Ma- ple Street, and his artwork can be viewed regularly at both locations. His work has also been on display at Florence Cham- ber of Commerce, Siuslaw Public Library, Florence Events Center and Peace- Health Peace Harbor Med- ical Center. His work covers a broad spectrum and may be ab- stract, linear, realistic or ex- perimental. “My art is inspired by a lifetime of unique experi- ences,” he said. Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) has an- nounced that the artwork of local artist Don Mathis is being exhibited at Oregon Pacific Bank in Florence during the month of No- vember. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Mathis has lived in Florence for nearly 40 years. He describes himself as “a self-taught mixed me- dia artist who has dabbled in everything from colored pencil, oils and acrylics to woodwork, leatherwork and wire-wrapped jewelry.” Mathis is a member artist Help contribute to Florence by serving on a city committee Would you like to see more public involvement in the City of Florence to make sure your voice is heard? Would you like to make a difference and help contribute to the goals and objectives of the City as a whole? At the Nov. 5 Florence City Council meeting, the council elected to amend its com- mittee structures to allow for more opportunities for citi- zens to get engaged in proj- ects that interest them. “City committees work tirelessly to provide much needed volunteer time to keep many of the City’s pro- grams functioning at a lev- el that would be impossible without their services,” states City Recorder/Economic De- velopment Coordinator Kelli Weese. City Committees general- ly meet once per month as a group. People interested in po- sitions should expect to at- tend recurring meetings and devote time for study of is- sues and performance above and beyond meeting atten- dance. Volunteer time is vital in working towards solutions to local government issues. If you are interested in serving your city and getting involved, consider applying for one of the open positions on one of the City’s commit- tees. The following boards and committees are currently filling vacancies for varying term lengths, with positions set to begin on February 1, 2019. • Planning Commission • Budget Committee • Community & Economic Development Committee • Environmental Manage- ment Advisory Committee • Public Arts Committee • Transportation Commit- tee • Audit Ad-Hoc Commit- tee The deadline for applica- tions is Dec. 31. Applying for a position is easy. The call has gone out to Salvation Army veteran bell ringers and new volunteer bell ringers to grab their Santa hats and bells and get ready to get those bells ring- ing. Those interested are wel- come to meet Saturday, Nov. 17, at Florence Municipal Airport Hanger 20E, where Sam Spayd and Salvation Army volunteers will be kick- ing off this year’s Kettle fund drive with spiced beverages, Christmas cheer and a rous- ing toast for a banner year. Last year, the Salvation Army kettles in Florence raised over $27,000 under Spayd’s supervision of 104 local bell ringers. According to Spayd, 90 percent of all money collect- ed stays in the community and supports those in need through a voucher system. In the last few years, local community members were often surprised to find a friend or neighbor perched by a kettle in front of Safe- way, Bi-Mart, Fred Meyer or Grocery Outlet. “It made the experience great fun to see the surprise in a friend’s face when they recognized me,” one volun- teer said. This year’s kickoff event is from 4 to 6 p.m. Volunteers will be available to directly park. “Come and find out what we can accomplish together,” Spayd said. “I’m looking for- ward to see who signs up to ring the bell this year.” Victorian Belle’s Christmas Bazaar November 16, 17 & 18 FRIDAY & SATURDAY, 9am-7pm SUNDAY, 9am-3pm ~ Three Rivers Casino ~ FREE ADMISSION & OUTSIDE FAMILY ENTRANCE Be sure to get your RAFFLE TICKETS on site for a chance to win a basket filled with handmade, one-of-a-kind items from each artist! 100% of raffle proceeds go to the Florence Homeless Teen Program.
