Studies have shown that over 40% of the global green house gasses are caused by the production and transport of consumer goods. Slowing down our purchase of new products or disposable products not only helps protect the environment for future generations, it can greatly improve your personal fi nances today. SE Changing habits is key to preventing waste – Many fi nd a better quality of life is the result of sharing and repairing and knowing that small habit changes can make a big diff erence. Finding ways to reduce waste when you shop, work and play may be easier than you think, and many directly save you money--or give other benefi ts. Our consumer choices have direct impacts on global environmental issues that directly impact the life support systems we all depend on, not just the size of our local landfi ll. Producing new products requires mining and logging, oft en removing earth's air fi lters. Th e processing and manufacturing of those resources into products adds pollution to air and water, threatening human health. Here's a short list of how you can start reducing waste, saving money, and being good to the Earth at the same time. • Use a spray bottle and cloth rag instead of expensive cleaning wipes. • Use real plates/utensils for picnics. • Choose products that have no package over those that do. • Bring your own bag to the store for groceries/veggies. • Use reusable water bottle, coff ee mug, etc. • Visit Reducing Waste Matters to see the big picture of why watching our waste is so important. Check out this short infographic video of the impacts of buying your water in bottles rather than getting it from the tap. You pay up to $10 per gallon for the bottled water. Th e environmental benefi ts of recycling that bottle are clearly better than trashing it – recycling reduces emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) by 16%. But the environmental benefi ts of not buying the bottle and instead saving your money are much better – this reduces GHG emissions by 79%. Th e Oregon DEQ published a life cycle assessment study comparing 48 diff erent water-delivery scenarios; from purchase of bottled, to drinking from tap, and offi ce delivery systems.
