Florence Elks to
recognize veterans
Sunday, Nov. 11, is Veter-
ans Day. In recognition, the
Florence Elks Lodge 1858 will
be hosting an event to honor
Florence-area veterans during
a public ceremony beginning at
11 a.m.
“How many of us take time
to thank members of the armed
forces?” asked Elks Exalted Rul-
er Bruce Smith. “November is
the month when Elks recognize
this special group of Americans
Candidate Caravan
who put their hopes, dreams
and lives on hold to protect the
freedoms we hold dear.”
The public is invited to cel-
ebrate Florence-area veterans
and active-duty military per-
sonnel.
“There are countless ways to
recognize the veterans in Flor-
ence and thank them for every-
thing they’ve done,” said Smith.
The Florence Elks Lodge is
located at 1686 12th St.
Free workshop to help
explain Medicare options
The public is invited to a
40-minute workshop present-
ed by “Retirement Specialist”
Ralph Ray, offered at 11 a.m.
and 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5,
at the Siuslaw Public Library,
1460 Ninth St.
The purpose is to explain the
sometimes confusing and com-
plicated federal health care reg-
ulations to those turning 65, as
well as older retirees and to our
veterans who feel that they may
be paying too much for Senior
Healthcare.
Ray will discuss will be ma-
jor differences in the types of
Medicare.
He will also discuss the
new choices available in Lane
County during the Annual En-
rollment Period, which runs
through Dec. 7.
Ray, a resident of Florence,
will go beyond Medicare to dis-
cuss what Medicare does not
cover, such as Long-Term Care
(LTC).
“Many of us only need a lit-
tle extra help with activities of
daily living to be able to stay at
home,” said Ray. “Learn about
LTC at-home healthcare, which
helps to delay the need for leav-
ing our home. It is also called
‘Aging in Place.’”

The Coastal Women Vet-
erans will have its monthly
luncheon on Friday, Nov. 9,
at 11:30 a.m. at the Shore-
wood Senior Residences, 1451
Spruce St., in Florence.
This month’s theme is “Giv-
ing thanks by giving,” so in
the spirit of the upcoming
Thanksgiving holiday, attend-
ees are asked to re-gift a white
elephant gift that someone
could use.
Each person is encouraged
to bring along at least one of
their own personal white ele-
phant gifts.
A bow or ribbon can be at-
tached to the gift but shouldn’t
obscure what it is, so anoth-
er guest can see exactly what
they’re selecting from the
White Elephant table.
All women who have served
in any branch of the military
are invited to attend, as well as
their caregiver or companion.
Prior reservations are need-
ed so the chef has an accurate
