Applications open for
Master Recyler program
Lane County Waste Man-
agement Division is offering
a free course this winter that
provides comprehensive train-
ing on local solid waste issues.
Hear from local experts, tour
local facilities and learn why
things are (or are not) recycla-
ble. The Waste Management
Division hosts this course to
help Lane County residents
and businesses reduce, reuse,
recycle and rethink waste hab-
its.
Winter classes will be held
on Tuesdays from 5:30. to 8:30
p.m., Jan. 8 through March
5, 2019, at Lane Communi-
ty College’s Florence Center,
3149 Oak St.
Applications are available
at www.lanecounty.org/mas-
terrecyclers or by calling 541-
682-2059. Completed applica-
tions may be submitted by fax,
email or regular mail.
Retirees, folks new to the
area, teachers, green job seek-
ers, parents, high school and
college students studying sus-
tainability, business owners
and employees tasked with
reducing solid waste in the
workplace all find common
purpose in the Master Recy-
cler community.

education to our communi-
ty, generating inspired and
engaged program graduates
who provide outreach and
examples of practical sustain-
ability during our events, at
our schools and in our neigh-
borhoods,” said Deveron
Musgrave, Waste Prevention
and Green Building Program
Coordinator at City of Eu-
gene, who took the program
in 2014. “Our local Master Re-
cyclers not only inspire those
around them to waste less —
they encourage their friends
and neighbors to do more.”
The Master Recycler train-
ing course includes 35 hours
of classroom instruction: nine
consecutive Tuesday evening
classes, a Saturday compost
demonstration and two Sat-
urday multi-site field trips to
area solid waste and recycling
sites. Instructors are local
experts in solid waste from
business, government and
non-profit sectors.
The course is free for those
who volunteer 30 hours to ed-
ucate and assist their commu-
ni-ties in the year following
the training.

Day Parade set for Sunday, Nov. 11, begin-
ning at 1:30 p.m. in Old Town. The
announcement was a surprise that had
been planned for four months and kept
secret from Sapp. The all-volunteer com-
mittee had a pizza feast from sponsor
RestoBar, and surprised Sapp with a com-
memorative plaque — the banner shown
is a mini version of one that will be carried
in the Parade in front of the 1960s authen-
tic Vietnam Jeep he will be riding in.

KXCR to host special Halloween programming
On Oct. 30 and 31, the KXCR
90.7 FM will offer a live broad-
cast of musical melodies and
memories from 10 a.m. to 8
p.m. as the station opens its
doors to meet and greet KXCR
listeners.
Come in for treats and spend
time with the station’s volunteer
staff. D.J.s will award prizes for
the best costume on Wednes-
day at 7 p.m.
“We’re eager to show folks
what community radio can
do,” said KXCR’s Stu Hender-
son. “We want to hear what our
listeners enjoy most about our
programming. Learn what's
happening at our community
supported station as we move
toward streaming programs
on the web and have a broader
connection with our communi-
ty radio station listeners.”

unteers on Halloween after-
noon and into the.

Oregon Coast Military Museum announces new board members
The Oregon Coast Military
Museum (OCMM) recently an-
nounce the election of two new
members to the Board of Di-
rectors. Ann Dowdy and Shelly
Medeiros were both elected
with unanimous votes at the
October board meeting.
Executive Director Cal Ap-
plebee described the candidates
“Each of these individuals bring
some phenomenal back ground
and experience that is going to
really enhance our board make
up and help us to continue to
grow as an institution. I am re-
ally excited to see them join us
and look forward to working
with each of them.”
Dowdy, a native Oregonian,
has an undergraduate degree
in Non-profit Management and
Communications, and exten-
sive experience in the non-prof-
it field, including museums. She
currently sits on the board of
the Oregon Museums Associ-
ation, which the Oregon Coast
Military Museum is a member
of. In addition, her family en-
joys extensive military heritage,
including husband, Terry, who
is Retired USCG Chief Warrant
Officer. They recently retired in
Florence.
Medeiros has an extensive
accounting and financial man-
agement background including
financial controller and general
manager of an online distribu-
tion company. Already involved
in other volunteer work in the
community, she and her hus-
band, Alan, retired to Florence
in 2015, and both Alan and
daughter Jolene, who also sits
on the board, are United States
Air Force veterans.

pleased with the caliber of each
of these new board members
and look forward to their con-
tributions to our mission.”
