Host a scholarship
for area students
Becoming a local scholarship
provider is a way community
members can make an imme-
diate impact on the lives of our
area graduates.
Local scholarships are im-
mensely important and help
pave the way for students to
achieve their goals of higher
education.
Anyone can set up a local
scholarship — business own-
ers, service clubs, public or
private organizations and even
individual community mem-
bers can become scholarship
providers.
On Tuesday, Oct. 30, Siuslaw
High School’s ASPIRE team
will be holding an informa-
tion meeting for any and all
Florence community members
interested in becoming a new
local scholarship provider.
Anyone interested is invited
to attend and learn how to be-
come a new local scholarship
provider, why local scholar-
ships are so important to our
students and community, ex-
plore the ever-rising cost of
colleges and learn about our
local scholarship awards cere-
mony.
The presentation will be held
at the Siuslaw Public Library,
1460 Ninth St., in the Bromley
Room, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Doo-Wah Riders to
arrive in Florence tonight
Seacoast Entertainment As-
sociation will open its 2018-19
Season with the Doo-Wah Rid-
ers on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 7
p.m. at the Florence Events Cen-
ter. Pre-show talk will begin at
6:15 p.m.
For more than 30 years, the
Doo-Wah Riders have been
blazing their own trail on the
musical range throughout the
west. They possess the rare com-
bination of many years of expe-
rience and youthful energy, fired
by a love of what they do.
The Doo-Wahs are country
with a unique original sound
they define as “high energy
country with a Cajun twist.”
Their tight musicianship and
powerful arrangements of clas-
sic, contemporary and original
songs have made them favorites
everywhere they go.
The Doo-Wahs consist of
Kenny Lee Benson, keyboards,
accordion, harmonica and vo-
cals; Lindy Rasmussen, guitar
and vocals; Aaron Castilla on
fiddle and vocals; Freddie John-
son, bass and vocals; And Peter
Kaye on drums.
The Doo-Wahs have appeared
in concert with Garth Brooks,
George Strait, Brad Paisley, Blake
Shelton, Alabama, Alan Jack-
son, Charlie Daniels, Faith Hill,
Brooks and Dunn, Keith Urban,
Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and
the list goes on. In addition, to
being artists in their own right,
the Doo-Wahs have served as a
back-up band to Chuck Berry,
Charlie Daniels, George Jones,
Glen Campbell and many more
country legends.
Tickets are on sale at the FEC
Box Office or on the Seacoast
Entertainment website at www.
seacoastea.org. Tickets are $35
for adults or $10 for students
under 18.
KCST to host annual Great
Pumpkin Give-Away tomorrow
On Thursday, Oct. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m.,
KCST/KCFM Coast Radio will again
present area kids and families with the
Great Pumpkin Give-Away, an annual
tradition now in its 30th year.
Pumpkins will be handed out by Siu-
slaw Valley Fire and Rescue volunteers at
4 p.m.
An estimated 3,000 pounds of pump-
kins will be given away, with most of
them gathered in a 15-minute period.
Definitely make sure you are not late be-
cause once they are gone, they’re gone.
Thirty years ago, KCST began hand-
ing out free pumpkins to local children
to celebrate its first anniversary on the
air. That tradition will continue with the
assistance of the Lemhouse family and
Florence True Value, Old School Furni-
ture and the Saw Shop.
Pumpkins of all sizes will be piled up
and then distributed for free while they
last to kids under the age of 18.
In addition to pumpkins, there will be
free hot dogs, A&W Root Beer and plen-
ty of treats for the
kids.
