Voters: review
both sides of ballot
Ballots are arriving in the
mail of registered Lane County
voters. Before turning in a bal-
lot, voters should remember to
review both sides of the ballot.
“Lane County Elections
wants to remind registered
voters to review both sides of
their official ballot. All reg-
istered voters will have addi-
tional voting opportunities on
the back of their ballot,” said
Lane County Clerk Cheryl Bet-
schart. “Once a ballot has been
returned it cannot be amended
or recast.”
Registered voters anywhere
in Oregon who have changed
their address still have time to
update their registration and
qualify for a full ballot. Those
with election-related questions
should contact Lane County
Elections at 541-682-4234.
Voters may drop off their
ballots at one of many official
drop box locations listed in the
insert included with their bal-
lot. Drop boxes are now open
and will remain open until 8
p.m. on Election Day. Flor-
ence’s drop box is at the Flor-
ence Police Department, 900
Greenwood St.
Lane County Elections is lo-
cated at 275 W. 10th Avenue, on
the corner of 10th and Lincoln
in downtown Eugene.

“We That Are Young”
by Preti Taneja
When 28-year-old Jivan
Singh returns home to New
Delhi after 15 years in the Unit-
ed States, it is only to witness
the unexpected resignation of
his father’s boss, Devraj Bapuji
— billionaire hotelier, political
operator and founder of the
vast company. Also known in

Taneja was born in England
to Indian parents. She teaches
writing in prisons and univer-
sities. “We That Are Young” is
her first novel.
Author George Byron Wright
The library is pleased to pres-
ent Oregon author George By-
ron Wright on Saturday, Nov.
3, at 1 p.m., to discuss and read
from his latest book, “I Am Ned
Pine.”
Wright was born in The
Dalles, where he lived until he
migrated to three other small
Oregon towns as his father
pursued the life of a mortician,
living in Baker City, Tillamook
and Roseburg. These towns
were the setting of his first
three novels: “Baker City 1948,”
“Tillamook 1952” and “Rose-
burg 1959.”
Wright then moved on to
contemporary fiction with
his fourth and following nov-
els “Driving to Vernonia,”
“Newport Blues: A Salesman’s
Lament” and “In the Wake of
Our Misdeed.”
Wright’s newest novel is “I
Am Ned Pine.” The protago-
nists Ashley and Ned Pine have
spoken perhaps six words over
yet another dispirited evening
meal when black-booted at-
tackers kick in their kitchen
door wielding aluminum bats
and no explanations. Who is
behind the heinous attack?
Answers lie in the convoluted
layers of Ned’s ordinary life. He
has written it all down as the
worst six months of his life.
Wright frequently appears at
the Florence Festival of Books
and anyone interested in Ore-
gon fiction and the art of writ-
ing will enjoy this program,
open to the general public.

Roots, bark, leaves and seeds
Colonial use of herbs is the
program topic for the Friday,
Oct. 26, meeting of the Ore-
gon Dunes Chapter Daughters
of the American Revolution.
Member Jacquie Beveridge
will share information about
early American use of herbs.
In addition to serving as
past vice regent, regent and
chaplain of this chapter, Beve-
ridge co-founded the Florence
Herb Enthusiasts in 2004.
During the club’s 12-year exis-
tence, 140 programs and many
workshops and field trips
were facilitated to educate the
community about the useful
plants.
After retiring from a 20-year
law enforcement career, Beve-
ridge followed her passion and
returned to school to become
a holistic health practitioner.
She studied herbs, massage
and energy medicine, and had
a private practice for 10 years.
Besides seeing clients, she
volunteered for Stand Down,
co-facilitated a Healing Touch
clinic, served as a volunteer
for hospice and the Holistic
Aids Response program and
provided service at an interna-
tional cancer treatment clinic.
