Spirituali-Tea to discuss
teachings of Bahá’í Faith
Anyone interested in discuss-
ing diverse spiritual ideas in
an atmosphere of respect and
inquisitiveness are invited to
join Spirituali-Tea, a group that
meets each Monday beginning
at 6:30 p.m., at 875 Seventh St.
This week, Monday, Oct.
2, the group will discuss The
Teachings of the Bahá’í Faith.
Dr. I. Walter Tunick, Ed.D.
will discuss his book “Spiritual
Journey: The Bahá’í Faith.”
The evening will be an effort
by Walter to acquaint partici-
pants with the message of the
Bahá’í Faith, its history and its
principles.
Walter states that the deteri-
orating moral conditions that
are spreading globally have
caused devastating gaps in so-
cial behavior that endanger the
well-being of all societies and
nations. The growth of interest
in moral and religious values
has been stirring calls to action
among the established religions.
The Bahá’í Faith, claiming he-
reditary connections with its
older sister religions, offers rel-
evant explanations for current
world problems that do not con-
flict with the earlier teachings.
Individual thoughts and per-
spectives are important to the
group, so come prepared to dis-
cuss and share.
At the end of the gathering,
the group will read all the prayer
requests that have been left in
the Prayer Pole in the garden
of the Florence Playhouse, 208

Unitarians hear about ‘backyard rain forests’
On Sunday, Oct. 21, from 10
to 11 a.m. at the Florence Uni-
tarian Universalist Fellowship,
guest speaker Marcia Phillips
will give an illustrated presenta-
tion on “The Rain Forest in Our
Own Backyard.”
“Here on the Oregon coast we
live in a rain forest. It is not the
more famous tropical rain forest
like that of the Amazon or Con-
go, but a less well-known type of
rain forest known as the coast-
al temperate rain forest,” said
Phillips. “Yet, like its sister in
the tropics, it is one of the most
important ecosystems in the
world. Pound for pound, old-
growth temperate rain forest
absorbs more carbon and has a
greater effect on the stability of
climate that any other type of
forest on Earth.”
The fellowship, located at
87738 Highway 101 at Heceta
Beach Road, is wheelchair ac-
cessible. Each service concludes
with refreshments and a dia-
logue circle to explore the ques-
tions that come up during each
worship service.

Meyer is the council presi-
dent and has served a number
of years on the council, includ-
ing a stint as acting mayor, be-
fore stepping down in 2007. In
December 2013, Meyer was ap-
pointed to fill a council vacan-
cy and later was elected to the
position.
At the time of his return to
Dunes City Council, Meyer
said he had been watching the
progress of the council for some
time and was pleased with their
ability to work well together.
Snow is the most recent
member of the Dunes City
Council. She was appointed in
December to fill the vacancy
created when then-councilor
Forsythe stepped into the role
of mayor.
Snow has lived in Dunes City
full-time since 2016, but she has
had family and real estate ties to
the area in the past. She also had
an extensive career with the U.S.
Air Force.
“I like to be involved with
the city where I live,” Snow said
during the Dec. 13 meeting
where she was sworn in. “… I
want to keep it a nice, friendly
place that people are happy to
live in, and that there’s no con-
tention between residents or the
cities around us.”
Wells has also served a num-
ber of terms on the Dunes City
Council. A Siuslaw graduate, he
served in the U.S. Air Force and
later became a logger in the re-
gion. He and his family run Old
Cedar Tree Woodworking in
Florence.
In a newsletter from 2011, he
wrote, “My goal on the Dunes
City Council is very simple. It
is to help protect the rights of
the citizens and the rights of the
property owners of Dunes City.”
In 2012, he was instrumental
in creating the Volunteer of the
Year award for the city’s top vol-
unteer.
Each of these candidates will
be on the Dunes City ballot,
which Lane County mailed this
week.
The Dunes City Council
meets the second Wednesday of
each month at 6 p.m. at Dunes
City Hall, 82877 Spruce St. in

Forsythe was appointed
Dunes City mayor on Aug. 25,
2017, after the death of former
mayor Rebecca Ruede. He first
joined the city council in 2016
after running a write-in cam-
paign.
“A while back, Rebecca asked
me to sit on Dunes City Coun-
cil and I was honored to do so,”
Forsythe said in 2017. “I tend
to get involved everywhere I
live, whether it be a homeowner
association or city, mainly be-
cause I found that if other peo-
ple decide what is good for me,
I want to at least have a voice in
it.”
He previously served as Port
of Siuslaw port manager and is
a veteran.
