Volunteers sought for Scotch broom removal project Oct. 13
Join local volunteers and
members of the Oregon Dunes
Restoration Collaborative to cut
and pull Scotch broom on Sat-
urday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to
noon at Heceta Dunes, the east
end of Joshua Lane, north of
Florence.
Two different events are
planned. One group will pull
smaller plants on gentle ground
out to a lake in the dunes and
potentially beyond, depending
on time. Native plants can be
viewed along the way and par-
ticipants can leave early if they
want to.
The other group will go on a
more strenuous hike. It will be
about 1.5 miles over mostly lev-
el terrain, but does include one
large dune to the work site. This
group will be removing mature
Scotch broom and gorse plants.
After the work party, there will
be an option to hike out to open
sand dunes to see native plants
and areas where there is little to
no European beach grass.
Bring loppers, tree saws,
shovels, weed wrenches, gloves,
hat, lunch or snack and water.
Long pants, and closed-toe,

National Coming Out Day
(NCOD) is an internationally
observed civil awareness day,
which takes place on Oct. 11
each year. On this day, peo-
ple celebrate individuals who
publicly identify as bisexual,
gay, lesbian or transgender —
coming out regarding one’s
sexual orientation or gender
identity being akin to a cul-
tural rite of passage for LGBT
people.
The NCOD was founded in
1988, by Dr. Robert Eichberg,
his partner William Gamble
and Jean O’Leary to celebrate
the Second National March on
Washington for Lesbian and
Gay Rights one year earlier.
After a media push in 1990,
NCOD was observed in all
50 U.S. states and seven other
countries.

Two new ‘Quests’ waiting to be explored on Sitcoos, in Old Town
For those who enjoy treasure
or scavenger hunts, Oregon
Coast Quests offer self-guided
learning adventures enjoyed
by people of all ages, alone or
with friends and family.
Vision Quest — Live Learn
Explore has announced that
two new Oregon Coast Quests
have been launched in the
Siuslaw Region: “Historic
Florence Quest” and “Siltcoos
Lagoon Quest.” While there
are over two-dozen Quests in
Western Oregon, mostly on
the coast, these are the first
two Quests to be developed in
Lane County.
The Historic Florence Quest
guides participants through
the interesting history of Old
Town in a new way. At the
end of the quest, participants
will discover clues that lead to
the location of a hidden box,
which contains a journal to
record the completion of the
Quest.
In addition, there is a special
stamp for the Quest sheet and
even more interesting informa-
tion about the things discov-
ered during the journey.
The Siltcoos Lagoon Quest is

located at the Siltcoos Rec-
reation Area and guides par-
ticipants through a beautiful
wooded trail along the Siltcoos
Lagoon.
The quest teaches about the
lagoon and why it is changing
from a lagoon to a meadow.
Learn about resident animals,
migratory birds and native/
non-native plants along the
way.
Uncover hidden clues along
the way which, in the end, will
reveal the location of the hid-
den box.
Printed guides for the His-
toric Florence Quest and
the Siltcoos Lagoon Quest
are available at the Florence
Area Chamber of Com-
merce.
The Historic Old Town
Quest is available also at the
Siuslaw Pioneer Museum.
The 2019 version of
“The Oregon Coast Quests
Book” will be available
locally in the New Year
and will include these two
Quests along with all of the
other Quests in Western
Oregon.
