2A | WEDNESDAY, O CTOBER 3, 2018 | SIUSLAW NEWS T HE R ECORD LRAPA delays outdoor burning date due to fire danger The fall outdoor burning season is expected to open on Friday, Oct. 13, for many Lane County residents. The season, originally set to start Oct. 1, has been delayed. The Lane County Fire De- fense Board decided to post- pone the opening of the season due to the drier weather condi- tions and heightened fire dan- ger still present in Lane County. “It has been a very dry sum- mer and the fire dangers have not been reduced enough to open for fall burning yet,” said Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) spokesperson, Jo Niehaus. “The Fire Defense Board will assess the opening of the season closely. It is not un- usual to delay the start of out- door burning season especially as we experience very dry sum- mers.” Outdoor burning, also known as open or backyard burning, allows some Lane County res- idents to burn dry woody yard debris that was generated on their own residential property. Recent rule changes in the last year include the prohibition of burning on properties less than two acres inside the Eugene Ur- ban Growth Boundary. LRAPA reminds residents that rules differ throughout the county, with some cities ban- ning burning within city limits all together. Violation of outdoor burning rules can result in stiff fines. Residents should call LRAPA’s outdoor burning advisory line at 541-726-3976 before burning to check eligibility. Due to the heavy wildfire smoke intrusions this summer, LRAPA encourages residents to explore alternative options to burning. Residents can dis- pose of woody yard debris for a minimal charge at one of Lane County’s various collection de- pots. Chipping and composting are also alternative options to burn- ing. For more information on open burning, visit www.lrapa. org or call LRAPA at 541-736- 1056 or find us on Facebook and Twitter @LaneRegionalAir. Florence Household Hazardous Waste Roundup this weekend Lane County is holding a free hazardous waste roundup for households and will collect up to 35 gallons of hazardous waste per customer. Businesses, schools, churches or non-profit organizations are subject to disposal fees. The roundup, which will be held at the Florence Transfer Station at 2820 N. Rhododen- dron Drive, will be held Friday, Oct. 5, from noon to 5 p.m., and on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. All community members are welcome to participate. What to bring: Paint, house- hold cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, car care products, arts and crafts products, pool chemicals, fluorescent lamps and other household hazardous waste. Check labels for words such as flammable, corrosive, poison, caution and danger. Don't bring: Empty contain- ers, drums, radioactive waste, asbestos, electronics or explo- sives. Any empty containers can be safely thrown in the trash. For information about dis- posal of radioactive waste, as- bestos and explosives, call 541- 682-3899. What about hazardous waste from businesses? Businesses, non-profit orga- nizations, schools and churches that generate small amounts of hazardous waste may pre-regis- ter for this event. They must pay a fee for disposal of their waste, but most can save money by us- ing this program rather than a contractor. Electronics recycling: The Glenwood, Cottage Grove, Creswell, Florence, Mar- cola, Oakridge, Rattlesnake, Veneta and Vida transfer sites accept the following items for free during normal operating hours (maximum of seven items at a time): televisions, comput- er monitors, central processing units (CPUs) and laptops. Appointments are required, and fees may apply for more than seven items; call 541- 682- 4120 to make an appointment. There is a $35 charge for large copy or printing machines and large floor-standing electronics.
