Fall lends itself to great artistic opportunities with autumn colors, the fall harvest and wildlife preparing for winter. Applications are available at www.eventcenter.org under the Gallery section, or pick up an application at the FEC office, 715 Quince St. The fee is $15 per rod for up to three pieces (depending on size of art pieces), or up to three pieces of 3-D art for the glass case. Percussion players are especially needed, but all woodwind, brass, string bass and percussion players are welcome to join this non-au- dition, community band. the pleasure of playing once again in a concert band. The band’s repertoire fa- vors transcriptions of light classical pieces, Broadway show tunes, marches and seasonal favorites. Regular concerts are held in Yachats, Florence and Newport, the first being the Seasonal Celebration Con- cert on Dec. 9 in Yachats. Pacific Coast Wind En- semble rehearses alternately in Florence and Waldport. Following the initial rehears- al at Siuslaw High School, the next rehearsal will be held in the Crestview Heights music room in Waldport on Sept. The first rehearsal of the new season will be held in Florence, in the Siuslaw High School band room on Monday, Sept. 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m. People wishing to join should be able to read mu- sic and have an instrument of their own, rented or bor- rowed. The band is made up of high school and adult play- ers, ranging in proficiency from advanced beginner to professional. Many members have resumed playing af- ter a decade or more hiatus, and find they quickly regain their proficiency as well as 27, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The band is currently un- der the leadership of Jerry Lees and David Olson. Lees is new to the band, having moved up from a career as band teacher and profes- sional trumpet player in southern California. Olson has conducted the band for several years, as well as conducting choral groups in Florence. Amy Stewart to be keynote speaker at book festival On Saturday, Sept. 29, the eighth annual Florence Fes- tival of Books will take place at the Florence Events Center. Authors and publishers are in- vited to register now before the tables are filled. The public is invited for free. This event is hosted by the Friends of the Florence Events Center, along with the event planning committee, and will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. An author’s panel and eve- ning with New York Times best-selling author Amy Stew- art will take place on Friday, Sept. 28. Tickets to see Stewart are on sale now online and at the box office. This festival offers the com- munity a chance to meet the authors and publishers of books.
