In the first set, neither team man- aged a lead of more than two points through the first half, until a series of errors by the Lady Warriors propelled the Lady Sailors to a 19-13 lead. From there, Mapleton held Siletz nearly scoreless for the remainder of the set, allowing just four more points as sophomores Emily Stevens and Trinity Peterson served up aces and fellow sophomore Taylor Wynona scored the final point for a 25-17 win. In game two, Mapleton took an early lead at 12-6, only to have Siletz rally back to take the lead at 17-15. Though the Lady Sailors were able to stay close, the Lady Warriors held on to even the match at 1-1 with a narrow 25-22 win. Moving into the third set, Mapleton once again took a quick 4-0 lead, only to have Siletz come from behind and tie the set at 12-12. However, senior Heather McMaster-Wills sparked a scoring run from the service line with a series of aces, along with aces from fellow senior Erin Michael. The Lady Warriors scored just five points for the rest of the set as McMaster-Wills hammered a kill at the net for a 25-17 victory that put Mapleton ahead 2-1. Hill: 25-17, 25-8, 13-25, 25-17 Thursday night’s non-league home volleyball win over Pleasant Hill was a dramatic one. Not because the match was hotly contested or a need for Siuslaw to rally — at least on the score- board. The Lady Viking’s rally was an emo- tional one that came late in the match, made necessary by an unexpected injury sustained by junior Aylenne Vazquez that left team members, fami- ly and spectators shaken. Leading up to it, the Lady Vikings had swept the first two sets definitively, 25-17, 25-8, before meeting some resistance from the visiting Lady Billies in the third set that seemed to take the wind out of the Lady Vikings’ sails. After a bruising 13-25 loss that, for the most part, was the result of Siuslaw errors more than Pleasant Hill offense, the Lady Vikings were trailing 3-5 when Vazquez and senior Alyssa Richards collided mid-air while NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS Lady Vikings sophomore Kya Blake (left) and seniors Makenzie York and Alyssa Richards move in for a block against Pleasant Hill Tuesday night. attempting to block a kill shot. When the two came down onto the hard- wood, only Richards got up — and it quickly became apparent from Vazquez’s painful cries that something was very wrong. “I just kept waiting for Aylenne to get up — but she didn’t,” said coach See SIUSLAW 2B f my coaches at Warren- ton High School were using this reasoning to bench the quarterback, I would have splinters in my behind.
