8A | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2018 | SIUSLAW NEWS ROUNDUP from page 1A Recent confusion surround- ing what can and cannot be recycled has created a situa- tion where many consumers across Lane County are simply throwing all plastic containers, bags and packaging in the trash, which then ends up in a landfill. This collection event is meant to decrease this problem. Florence, OR CCB#195304 Michelle Le Blanc, a Master Recycler, will be coordinating local efforts to bring as much plastic waste as possible to the Glenwood Station from Flor- ence on Sept. 30. “The Master Recyclers of Florence are planning to gath- er plastics at my house to take to Eugene,” Le Blanc said. “We must go through each load to make sure it is clean and only the appropriate plastics are in- cluded.” Only specific 2, 4 and 5 plas- tics can be accepted at this time, and they must be clean and dry. Le Blanc said the processor accepting the plastics, Denton Plastics, doesn’t have a wash line to handle that part of sort- LEGACY from page 1A ing. Master Recyclers will also be working with local groups Precious Plastic and Florence ORganizes (FOR) to spread the word of this dropoff project. “We plan to accept plastics until Friday, Sept. 28, because it will take time for us to look through people’s donations, so we don’t … include garbage or dirty plastic, or the wrong type of plastic,” Le Blanc said. “It is our hope that this will be a monthly offering to us, so please bring the correct plastic that is clean.” Le Blanc wants to make drop- ping off plastic waste at her home as easy as possible. People are asked to call her first at 541- 997-1275 to arrange a drop off time and get the address. “I would like to be there when they come so we can check through the boxes when the donations come. This way people can learn as they donate which are not the correct plas- tics,” she said. Bell reiterated that this event is a learning exercise as well as an opportunity to get rid of some plastic waste. “Help friends and neighbors to ‘Recycle It Right’” she said. “People should be ready to an- swer questions from folks in their circle of influence about what is and is not accepted at this event. … Ensure that mate- rials arrive sorted into separate bags or boxes by number and by shape, and decline incorrect plastics and unclean materials.” People can get more tips by reading Lane County’s materi- als on the event. “The most important reason we Master Recyclers are doing this is to limit the number of vehicles that will be delivering to the Eugene Recycle Station,” Le Blanc said. “An event like this could bring in hundreds of vehicles with one or two box- es, but if one vehicle had all of Florence’s donations, it would greatly reduce traffic.” For more information on the Recycle Roundup, contact Bell at kelly.bell@co.lane.or.us or 541-682-2059. “And she was so generous. She gave everyone the LED lights that hang around their necks so we could be profes- sionals,” Annie added. Leah also took on a lead role within the LRP — directing “Les Misérables” in 2014 with a large, inclusive cast. Together with her husband Scott, Mary Jo Vollmar re- members Leah as someone who encouraged people to join the cast and crew, no matter their age. “We met Leah when she be- lieved a little girl named Nyah could play the role of the boy Gavroche in her epic produc- tion of ‘Les Mis,’” Mary Jo said. “That was the start of a beau- tiful relationship, where Leah provided love, guidance and friendship to our kids, and to me and Scott as well.” In 2016, Jonah Vollmar, then 7 years old, was encour- aged to become Pirate Pete, an invented role, in “Pirates of Penzance.” Scott said, “Leah was going to have him just be a walk-on, but he ended up going out for four different scenes.” People in the audience could easily pick up his clear young voice singing along with the rest of the pirates. And Leah invited older peo- ple to join the cast, too. “When we did ‘Pirates,’ we had more sisters than any oth- er production has ever had,” Kathleen said. “If you audi- tioned, you were in. That’s how she did it. … Our sisters ran the gamut from 15 to 82. She gave the oldest sister the line, ‘You’re not as young as we are, papa’ — which was just hysterical with this little old lady.” Backstage, too, was inclu- sive, as Leah was willing to work with anyone who wanted to learn the ropes of setting a scene. “It’s not often you see back- stage people in a motorized wheelchair,” Annie said. “She brought in everybody. She was terrific at that.” While “Pirates” was a huge feat for Florence, it wasn’t Le- ah’s dream show. She decided to bring out “Master Class” in 2017.
