City Club to host talk
on public art Friday
On Friday, Sept. 7, the
City Club of Florence will
host a presentation by the
Florence Public Art Com-
mittee with Harlen Spring-
er at the Siuslaw Public
Library’s Bromley Room,
1460 Ninth St. at noon.
It is a busy and excit-
ing time for the Public Art
Committee (PAC). The
committee has complet-
ed eight projects in the
past 15 months, with two
more large mural projects
planned for com-pletion by
Spring/Summer 2019.
PAC representatives will
show slides and discuss the
most recent projects as well

as provide a preview of the
new projects.
The PAC Mission is to
“Integrate art into the daily
life of our community” as
well as support one the City
of Florence’s goals of im-
proving the “Livability and
Quality of Life” in Florence.
As an all-volunteer com-
mittee, PAC is proud of
what they have accom-
plished through the pas-
sion and dedication of its
volunteers and the support
of the community.
Doors will open at 11:30
a.m. and light refreshments
will be available.

Members of the Siuslaw Valley
Firefighters Association made the
most of sunny weather on Labor Day,
hosting a car wash fundraiser at the
main station on Highway 101.
Firefighters washed cars for donations
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., raising money
for the volunteer association, which
sponsors scholarships and other
educational opportunities.

Local Boy Scouts to hold annual Pinewood Derby
Boy Scout Troop 721 is
holding its 7th Annual Pine-
wood Derby on Saturday,
Sept. 8. The majority of the
fundraising for this event is
based on sponsors contacted
by the Scouts.
Pinewood aficionados can
dust off their cars and prep
them for a race down the
track that will be set up on
the corner of Bay Street and
Nopal Street.
Check in time for the race
is between 10 and 11 a.m.
The race will begin promptly
at 11:30 am.
Registration fee is $5 per
car. All funds raised by this
event are used for camping
experiences that the boys
will use to earn merit badg-
es and learn the principles of
scouting.
The event is held in con-
junction with the Rods ‘N
Rhodies event that features
hot rods dis-played through-
out the weekend in Old
Town.
