LCSO conducts enforcement
to reduce crashes, fatalities
The Lane County Sheriff ’s
Office (LCSO) is using spe-
cial allocated funding from
the Oregon Department of
Transportation and the Or-
egon State Sheriffs’ Associa-
tion to provide overtime pa-
trols with a focus on Traffic
and Life Safety through the
Labor Day weekend.
LCSO
deputies
have
logged more than 30 hours
of grant-funded overtime
patrols so far, focusing on
seat belt use, speeding, dis-
tracted driving and DUII
detection and apprehension.
This saturation patrol ef-
fort is being done in con-
junction with a nation-wide
blitz by law enforcement to
reduce the number of inju-
ries and deaths from vehicle
crashes related to impaired
and distracted driving.
LCSO wants to remind
motorists to buckle up, drive
safely and drive sober.
With the passage of Ore-
gon’s marijuana laws, this is
also a reminder of the im-
pairment marijuana has on
drivers, impacting the driv-
er’s ability to safely operate a
motor vehicle.
Driving Under the Influ-
ence of Intoxicants (DUII)
applies to drivers under the
influence of marijuana, as it
does with alcohol.
The nation-wide seatbelt
enforcement is focused on
child safety seats, texting
and speed enforcement. As
of May 2017, Oregon law
requires children less than
2 years of age to be in a rear
facing child seat and in a
booster seat until they are at
least 4 feet, 9 inches tall.
Florence Police to conduct pedestrian enforcement operation
The Florence Police Depart-
ment will conduct a Pedestri-
an Enforcement Operation at
Ninth and Kingwood streets
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Satur-
day, Sept. 8.
It will be canceled if it is rain-
ing. Under Oregon law, a cross-
walk exists at any public street
intersection, whether marked
with paint or unmarked. Cross-
walks also exist between inter-
sections (mid-block) where in-
dicated with white paint.
At a traffic signal, drivers
must:
• Stop and remain stopped
for pedestrians until they have
cleared the lane in which the
driver is traveling and the adja-
cent lane.
• Stop and remain stopped
for pedestrians until they have
cleared the lane into which the
driver’s vehicle is turning and
at least six feet of the adjacent
lane.
At any other crosswalk —
those without a signal — driv-
ers must:
• Stop and remain stopped
for pedestrians until they have
cleared the lane in which the
driver is traveling and the adja-
cent lane.
• Stop and remain stopped
for students crossing (or about
to cross) a street under the di-
rection of a crossing guard.
• Stop and remain stopped
for a blind or blind and deaf pe-
destrian using a cane or a guide
dog, until the pedestrian is
completely across the roadway.
A stopped car may be a clue
that a pedestrian is crossing.
Don't pass until you know
what is going on. In fact, it is
not only unsafe but also ille-
gal in Oregon to pass a vehicle
stopped at a crosswalk for a pe-
destrian.
Giving pedestrians more
space and slowing down in
their presence can save lives.
Pedestrians struck by vehicles
at 40 mph have an 85 percent
chance of dying in the collision.
That death rate drops to 15
percent at 20 mph.
