Key to Siuslaw’s rally was the defen-
sive efforts of freshman libero Hayden
Muller, who dug up 19 attempted kills
against the Bulldogs, along with serv-
ing up 3 aces.
“Hayden was an animal out there,”
Hornung said of Muller’s work on the
court. The talented freshman fills
what was a potentially worrisome void
after the graduation of all-league libe-
ro Maci Wells last June. The Viks
opened the match with a narrow 25-20
win, in a set that Siuslaw rallied from
behind to tie at 8-8.
The game was tied three more times
before kills from junior Mia Collins
and seniors Alyssa Richards and Falon
Borgnino helped secure the win.
However, in the next two sets North
Bend was able to edge out the Lady
Viks 25-20, 25-20, taking a 2-1 lead in
the match that put the Lady Bulldogs
in a position to end the match in four
sets.
“But we came back strong,” said
Hornung, who credited Richards’
leadership with helping keep the
team’s momentum going. “She was
very vocal and helped keep everyone
focused.”
In addition, Collins was steadily
hammering away at North Bend, par-
ticularly in game four, before eventu-
ally finishing the night with 17 kills,
along with 10 from Richards.
After winning the fourth set
decisively 25-16, Siuslaw contin-
ued its march to victory, moving
ahead 6-0 on errors from North
Bend and aces served up by junior
Aylenne Vazquez.
The Bulldogs had a short-lived
rally late in the game, pulling
within 6 points, but kills from
Collins and Borgnino kept the
Lady Viks rolling toward a 15-8
win to take the match, 3-2.
The victory bodes well for
Siuslaw as it enters the newly-ad-
justed Sky-Em League along with
Cottage Grove, Marshfield and
Marist, which are ranked No. 3,
No. 5 and No. 8, respectively, by
the Oregon School Activities
Association (OSAA).
The Sky-Em also includes
strong programs from Junction
City and Elmira.
The Lady Viks will get a short
break before participating in the
Bandon Jamboree, Sept. 4, when
Siuslaw will get a chance to volley
against Bandon and North
Douglas.
The Viks will return to Glenn
Butler court Sept. 6 to host
Pleasant Hill for a non-league
match beginning at 6:30 p.m.
