Recently, the Kiwanis Club of Florence presented Chuck Trent of the Boys & Girls Club of Western Lane County
$3,000 to “Help Keep The Lights On.” This donation helped fulfill the Kiwanis Club mission of “Serving the
Children of the World.” Like the Kiwanis Club, the Boys & Girls Club believes that the future of the nation rests
with its children. Today’s kids will become tomorrow’s parents, workforce and leaders. With the support of orga-
nizations like the Kiwanis Club of Florence, the Florence community can help keep the lights on at the Boys &
Girls Club. Pictured are (from left) Jean Murphey, President of Kiwanis Club of Florence, and Chuck Trent, execu-

elections of Sam Spayd and
Bart Mealer.
Spayd moved to Florence in
1993 and has been involved in
many aspects of the commu-

a distinguished career in the
U.S. Air Force and as a captain
for United Airlines.
He has been a community
volunteer for the past 25 years,

the original board members

Deeds of Valor.
Spayd has been a member
and Chairman of the City Air-
port Advisory Committee for
over ten years and is the annu-
al Salvation Army “Red Kettle
Campaign” coordinator, an
active member of the Board
of SeaCoast Entertainment
Association, and has been
responsible for fundraising
from corporate sponsors.
In conjunction with the
Boys & Girls Club of Western
Lane County, Spayd created
a highly successful two-week
program, the Florence Air
Academy, which introduces
teens to aviation and future
career opportunities.
Spayd is also a member of
the Rotary Club of Florence.
Mealer moved to Florence
from Yakima, Wash., in 2006
to take a job with the Bonne-
ville Power Administration.
