Free workshop will help
explain Medicare options
The public is invited to a
free Medicare workshop on
Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m.
at Siuslaw Public Library’s
Bromley Room, 1460 Ninth St.
The hour-long workshop will
be presented by Linda Clark-
son of Futurity First Insurance
Group.
The purpose is to help ex-
plain the sometimes confusing
and complicated federal health
insurance pro-gram to anyone
who will soon turn 65 and en-
roll in Medicare.
“Medicare 101” will touch on
the Medicare enrollment pro-
cess.
During the workshop, Clark-
son will review Medicare Part A
and Part B, as well as Medicare
Advantage (Part C) plans and
Medicare Supplement health
insurance plans.
Participants also will learn
how Medicare Part D Prescrip-

to get help with the cost of pre-

Military museum to recognize women
veterans during Military Heritage Day
The Oregon Coast Military
Museum is hosting its Military
Heritage Day on Saturday, Aug.
25, starting at 2 p.m., at Sam
Spayd’s hangar at the Florence
Municipal Airport.
The program will focus on
Women in the Military with
two speakers and a poster dis-
play featuring 20 women veter-
ans from around Oregon.
Elizabeth Estabrooks, her-
self a veteran of the U.S. Army
from 1977 to 1980, joined the
Oregon Department of Veteran
Affairs in 2016 and will be one
of the speakers.
“I feel fortunate every sin-
gle day to be able to work with
women veterans and com-
munity partners and facilitate
shaping policies and proce-
dures that improve services for
women veterans,” she said.
Capt. Sharon Armstrong,
USCGR (Retired) will also be
speaking.
Armstrong began her ca-
reer in 1972 under the Coast
Guard Reserve’s “Direct Petty
Officer Program.” During her
31-year career, which includ-
ed assignments in the Coast
Guard’s District 5, District 12,
and our own District 13, Arm-
strong became the first woman
in District 12 to receive a direct
commission from the Inactive
Duty ranks since World War II.
Oregon Coast Military Mu-
seum is located at 2145 King-
wood St. in Florence, and open
to the public Thursday through
Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 4
p.m.

Aging-in-place specialist to speak at library
On Monday, Aug. 20, Flor-
ence resident and retirement
specialist Ralph Ray will hold
two meetings to discuss aging
in place and options for seniors.
“This is all about help for the
aging and their concerned chil-
dren,” Ray said. “We all want to

into a nursing facility.”
According to Ray, there is a
new plan offered in Oregon,
through Senior Lifestyle Solu-
tions, that potentially pays “out
of pocket” expenses for cus-
todial care at home, including
skilled nursing in the home,
physical therapy, speech pathol-
ogy, respiratory therapy and
more. Ray will talk about relat-
ed details at his meetings, held
at the Siuslaw Public Library,
1460 Ninth St., at 10:30 a.m. and
4:30 p.m. on Aug. 20.
