COM | SIUSLAWNEWS | @ SIUSLAWNEWS Community News Prepare for eergencies with Be ready Expo The Siuslaw News and Western Lane Emergency Operations Group are holding an event in order to connect residents on the Oregon coast with businesses and emergency service providers to raise awareness about disaster pre- paredness. The Be Ready — Storm Ready Disaster Expo will be on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Attendees at this expo will look forward to speakers and demos that will help prepare our commu- nity for the increasing vulnerabili- ty to extreme weather and water events. We live in the most severe weather-prone country on Earth and where we are located on the Oregon Coast, in the event of a natural disaster, we will be cut-off from major cities and resources a minimum of 10-days, likely more. “This event is a great opportuni- ty for residents on the Oregon coast to learn how to prepare for and recover from disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes and floods” stated Jenna Bartlett, General Manager of the Siuslaw News and event organizer. This free event will feature inter- active vendor booths, demonstra- tions and seminars to help people better assist their families and the community in the event of a natu- ral disaster. Have you ever been curious about how to prepare for a disas- ter? What should you do first? What should you buy? What should you not buy? Disaster Preparedness is often considered complicated and expensive. The keynote speaker, author Dave Robinson, is a disaster pre- paredness newspaper columnist and he will dissect topics into bite- sized pieces, showing how the average person can be prepared for a disaster with minimal expense and a little ingenuity. In addition, the event also offers an Emergency Suturing Class taught by PeaceHealth emergency physicians. People should register before the event. Kiwanis Club of Florence Oregon will be offering a free hot dog lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. As a bonus, the first 300 attend- ees will receive a 2.5-gallon water storage container. “There will be something for everybody,” said Bartlett. “Please plan to attend this im-portant and educational event.” For more information, visit www.eventcenter.org/general/ page/be-ready-storm-ready-ex- po-0. A PPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR UPCOMING M ASTER R ECYCLER P ROGRAM Lane County Waste Management Division is offering a free course pro- viding comprehensive train- ing on local solid waste issues in Florence. Hear from local experts, tour local facilities and learn why things are (or are not) recyclable. The Waste Management Division hosts this course to help Lane County residents and busi- nesses reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink waste habits. In Florence, classes will be held Tuesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Jan. 8 through March 5, 2019, at Lane Community College Florence Center, 3149 Oak St. “Because of recent disrup- tions in the global recycling market and the growing awareness that we need to do more to keep materials out of the landfill, this is a great time for people who are interested in learning how they can change their habits and help lead their community to improve our recycling practices overall,” said Master Recycler Coordinator Kelly Bell. Applications are available at www.lanecounty.org/mas- terrecyclers or by calling 541-682-2059. Completed applications may be submitted by fax, email or regular mail. Retirees, folks new to the area, teachers, green job seekers, parents, high school and college students study- ing sustainability, business owners and employees tasked with reducing solid waste in the workplace all find common purpose in the Master Recycler com- munity. The Master Recycler training course includes 35 hours of classroom instruc- tion: nine consecutive Tuesday evening classes, a Saturday compost demon- stration and two Saturday multi-site field trips to area solid waste and recycling sites. Instructors are local experts in solid waste from business, government and non-profit sectors. The course is free for those who volunteer 30 hours to educate and assist their communities in the Coin ohoi returno to Florence thio ieekend The 21st Annual Florence Coin Show is coming to the Florence Events Center on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18 and 19.
