G ENERAL N EWS
90 by 30 to deliver first ‘Welcome Baby Boxes’
Lane County’s 90 by 30 Child
Abuse Prevention Project operates
on the belief that communities can
reduce abuse and neglect by im-
plementing protective strategies to
provide social, emotional and edu-
cational support to families as they
embark on the adventure of parent-
ing.
West Lane 90 by 30 is just now im-
plementing a strategy that serves this
purpose.
This week, 90 by 30 team members
and Healthy Families staff will deliv-
er the first of many “Welcome Baby
Boxes.” This internationally recog-
nized program tells new parents that
there is a whole community who
cares about them and their baby.
90 by 30 hopes to deliver a box to
the families of each and every new
baby in the region, including Flor-
ence, Mapleton, Swisshome, Dead-
wood, Westlake and Dunes City.
The box, which can serve as a safe
sleep space for newborns for their
first few months, is filled with a vari-
ety of practical items and a valuable
resource binder with health and safe-
ty information and local resources.
Also included is a DVD called “Pe-
riod of Purple Crying” and a purple
hat for babies, which informs parents
about strategies to calm babies and

Yachats River Valley Farm Tour to
celebrate ninth year this Saturday
The annual tour of the farms
and ranches along the Yachats
River Road will take place this
year on Saturday, Aug. 11, from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring lo-
cally grown fruits, vegetables,
grass-fed beef, baked goods,
jams, refreshments, and live
music.
Six farms will make up the
roster this year, each featur-
ing a different attraction, most
with local produce or beef for
sale.
The first two, Seeds of Ore-
gon and K&R Beef, near mile-
post 1, will offer vegetables,
plants, grass-fed beef and eggs
for sale. Next is Forks Farm at
the T-intersection near mile-
post 7, offering organic fruits,
blueberries, cut flowers, jams
and produce.
Forks Farm is a florist and
accepts orders for floral ar-
rangements suitable for wed-
dings and other celebrations.
Turn right at the intersection
and follow the South Fork of
the Yachats River to Starshine
Farm to visit with llamas, al-
pacas and peacocks.
A little farther down the road
is River Wind Farm, where visi-
tors can order next year’s grass-
fed beef or purchase fruit and
home-grown produce for sale.
A must-see stop is the Yaqui-
na Nursery. This world-famous
nursery features cacti and suc-
culents from literally all over
the planet. Most of the stock is
for sale and is the place to buy
a special cactus or succulent for
your home or garden.
