As a commercial fi sherman, he came close to being on the right spot for catching Chi- nook salmon. We were standing at the north end of the Florence Municipal Airport with the Florence Area Radio Control Aircraft Association (FARCAA). About a dozen mem- bers had a variety of tiny planes spread out across the grassy field, representing aircraft from all eras from aviation. Here are some ideas to help you beat the dog days of fishing: • Fish early in the morning when waters are cooler and fish are more active. • Look for fish in deeper water, where it’s cooler. • Focus on warmwater spe- cies like bass, crappie, blue- gill and walleye. • Travel to higher elevation lakes and streams where the water, and you, will be cool- er. • Consider a trip to the coast where ocean and bay fishing can be good throughout the summer.' The popular Buoy 10 fishery will lead off Columbia River fall fisheries with effort and catch in other sections of the mainstem building over time. A Low Tide Aug. 4 I was going to be piloting a trainer plane — cheap, made of foam and easily repair- able if things went south on my first flying attempt. “Maybe you’re a ringer and have been doing this for years,” Morales optimistically told me. I wasn’t. In fact, I knew nothing about the hobby of RC aircraft. “My plane is going down,” I told him. Morales, the president of the association, had my back. “Everybody says, ‘I’m going to crash it,’ but I’ll be able to take over whenever there’s a problem.” he said. There were two remote controls, one I would be using to steer the plane, and another that Morales would use to bail me out when things got dicey. “These two radios are linked together,” he said. “There’s a master and a slave. You’ll be the slave.” He stopped for a moment, laughed. “Well, let’s say there’s an instructor and a Tips for fishing during hot weather See By Lloyd Little total of 375,500 adult Chinook are expected to enter the Columbia this fall, which is about 80 percent of last year’s actual return and 50 percrent of the recent 10-year average. Due to a lower forecasted return of upriver bright fall Chinook, fisheries have been planned to remain within a harvest rate limit of 8.25 percent on these fish. This rate is lower than in recent years and has resulted in season and bag limit See 4:20am / -0.8 4:03pm / 2.5 Aug. 9 11:44am / 6.0 5:14am / -1.3 11:01pm/ 8.2 5:03pm / 2.2 Aug. 10 12:32am / 6.4 11:55pm / 8.4 6:03am / -1.8 5:59pm / 1.8 S IUSLAW N EWS 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 SALMON 2B • Heating Systems • Heat Pumps • Sales / Service • Ductless Heat Pumps 1645 Kingwood ~ Florence (541) 997-2422 www.trane.com (L-R) Matteo Cocciolo, Owners Krystal & Steve Wolford, Abbie Kimble CCB#64
