Book Review
“The Maze at Windermere”
by Gregory Blake Smith
When a drunken party guest
challenges him to a late-night
tennis match, Sandy Allison
finds himself unexpectedly en-
tangled in the moneyed world
of Newport, RI.
A former touring pro a little
down on his luck, Sandy has
nothing to stake against the vin-
tage motorcycle his opponent
wagers. But then Alice DuPont
— the young heiress to a New-
port mansion called Winder-
mere — offers up her diamond
necklace.
With this reckless wager be-
gins a dazzling narrative od-
yssey that braids together four
centuries of aspiration and ad-
versity in this renowned seaside
society capital.
A witty and urbane bachelor
of the Gilded Age embarks on a
high-risk scheme to marry into
a fortune; a young writer soon
to make his mark turns him-
self to his craft with harrowing
social consequences; an aristo-
cratic British officer carries on a
courtship during the American
Revolution that leads to murder;
and, in Newport’s earliest days,
a tragically orphaned Quaker
girl imagines a way forward for
herself and the slave girl she has
inherited.
Gregory Blake Smith weaves
these intersecting worlds into a
rich, brilliant tapestry. A deftly
layered novel of love, ambition,
and duplicity, ”The Maze at
Windermere” charts a voyage
across the ages into the maze of
the human heart.
Summer Reading
Drawing to a Close
Another wonderful summer
reading program is drawing to a
close, with only one and a half
weeks left of exciting events for
children, teens and adults. But
there are still wonderful pro-
grams scheduled for that peri-
od.
Don’t forget that kids of all
ages are welcome to come to
the program tomorrow at 10:30
a.m., presented by the Museum
of Natural and Cultural History
from the University of Oregon,
in addition to the continuing
movie afternoons and evenings.
The Grande Finales will be
next week, in Mapleton on
Wednesday at noon, and in
Florence on Thursday, begin-
ning at 10 a.m.
Teens have programs continu-
ing through next Friday, Aug. 3,
with a lock-in at the library be-
ginning at 6 p.m. that day and
finishing up Saturday morning.
If you need a schedule of all
the remaining activities, stop
by the library, 1460 Ninth St. in
Florence and 88148 Riverview
Ave. in Mapleton.
Terra Nova Trio
Don’t forget that today,
Wednesday, July 25, at 2 p.m.,
the library is hosting the Terra
Nova Trio in a free concert. The
trio consists of musicians An-
nalisa Morton, Mike Curtis and
Sandy Holder.
Offering a fresh vision of con-
cert programming, the Terra
Nova Trio is a new ensemble
with players from the Eugene
Symphony and the Oregon
Bach Festival. With their tra-
ditional classical instruments
(oboe, bassoon and piano), they
bring Bach and modern French
composers to life.
With their popular instru-
ments (sax, guitar, and accor-
dion) they generously mix in
klezmer, tango, blues and exotic
originals. The result is a satisfy-
ing new world of possibilities.
Don’t miss this wonderful day
time concert open to the general
public. In addition, the Friends
of the Library will be hosting a
South American Potluck imme-
diately following the concert in
the library lobby.
Come for the concert and
then stay for some delicious
food, or just stop in around 3
p.m. and have a bite.
Police invite community
to National Night Out
On Tuesday, Aug. 7, the
Florence Police Department
is hosting a National Night
Out Event at Miller Park from
6 to 9 p.m.
National Night Out is a
community-police event held
throughout the United States
and is meant to increase
awareness about police pro-
grams in communities, such
as drug prevention, town
watch, neighborhood watch
and other anti-crime efforts.
The Florence Police De-
partment will be providing
hot dogs and hamburgers,
chips and soft drinks at no
cost to the public.
There will be a variety of gi-
ant inflatable play structures
and kids games, with visits by
police officers, public works,
firefighters and paramedics,
along with safety demonstra-
tions, exhibits and activities
for all residents. Local youth
will also be able to get color-
ing books, crayons, pencils
and other giveaways.
The City of Florence and
Florence Police Department
are confident that they can
make this community event a
success and bring neighbors
together with the men and
women who protect them.
The safety of our communi-
ties depends on both law en-
forcement and the neighbors
they serve. National Night
Out enhances that coopera-
tion.
The community is invited
join them for a fun filled eve-
ning.
Event details are available at
www.ci.florence.or.us/police/
national-night-out-0 and on
the city’s Facebook page.
