SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2018 | 5A Chris Chandler looks at 30 years on the road Provocative American story- teller Chris Chandler hosts the KXCR Summer Celebration on Sunday July 22, at 7 p.m. at the Florence Unitarian Universal- ist Fellowship. Only a small fraction of Flor- ence's entertainment seekers has experienced the likes of this unique American story- teller show. As such, join with KXCR in celebrating Chan- dler’s 30 years on the road. Behind Chandler’s spoken word riffs on American cul- ture is a sharp eye and a deep love of language. Striking in appearance, sporting a black bowler on his shaved head, he sometime finds himself climb- ing any nearby chair to add emphasis to a story’s riveting conclusion. A showman to the core. Chandler, son of a southern preacher, left his home and, instead of pursuing a career in New York theater, he trust- ed his instincts to hit the road to find and tell the stories of America. As any entertainer will attest, it hasn’t been easy. For the last 30 years he has traveled from gig to gig losing his long blond hair but sharpening his craft. Everywhere he and his guitar playing sidekick, Sean Shanah- an, appear, the reaction usually includes a recognition that this is a totally unique entertain- ment experience. As a special anniversary treat, Chandler will be doing a retrospective of pieces from over the years. The suggested donation is $15 to attend. Doors of the fel- lowship, located at the junction of Highway 101 and Heceta Beach Road, open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. For more information, call 541 997-2997. Library Tidings News a b o u t the Siuslaw Pu b l i c Li b r a r y Library Tidings, a regular feature of the Siuslaw News, features news about upcoming Siuslaw Public Library pro- grams for adults and children, new books and videos, and other library news of interest to the community. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Book Review “Summer Hours at the Robbers Library” by Sue Halpern Author Sue Halpern lives in Vermont with her husband, en- vironmental writer Bill McK- ibben. In “Summer Hours at the Robbers Library,” Halpern presents intriguing, sympathetic characters and the hope of sec- ond chances, all set in a small- town library. People are drawn to libraries for all kinds of reasons. Most come for the books themselves, of course; some come to borrow companionship. For head librar- ian Kit, the public library in Riv- erton, New Hampshire, offers what she craves most: peace. Here, no one expects Kit to talk about the calamitous events that catapulted her out of what she thought was a settled, suburban life. She can simply submerge herself in her beloved books and try to forget her problems. But that changes when 15-year-old, home-schooled Sunny gets arrested for shop- lifting a dictionary. The judge throws the book at Sunny — literally — assigning her to do community service at the library for the summer. Bright, curious, and eager to connect with some- one other than her off-the-grid hippie parents, Sunny coaxes Kit out of her self-imposed iso- lation. They’re joined by Rusty, a Wall Street highflyer suddenly crashed to earth. In this little library that has become the heart of this small town, Kit, Sunny, and Rusty are drawn to one another, and to a cast of other offbeat regulars. As they come to terms with how their lives have unraveled, they also discover how they might knit them together again and fi- nally reclaim their stories. Today: “Judy, Joan & Joni” On Wednesday, July 18, at 1 p.m., award-winning nationally touring duo Jennings & Keller will be presenting “Judy, Joan and Joni — 3 Voices That Defined a Generation.” Laurie Jennings and Dana Keller will share the songs and the stories behind the songs of Judy Collins, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell, three women who were at the heart of the folk music re- vival of the 1960s. This program is free and open to the public. Terra Nova Trio On Wednesday, July 25, at 2 p.m., the library is pleased to present the Terra Nova Trio in a free concert. The trio consists of musicians Annalisa Morton, Mike Curtis and Sandy Holder. Offering a fresh vision of concert programming, the Ter- ra Nova Trio is a new ensemble with players from the Eugene Symphony and the Oregon Bach Festival. With their tradition- al classical instruments (oboe, bassoon, and piano), they bring DIVERSIFIED MARINE & EQUIPMENT SALES OREGON COAST’S SUPERSTORE Volunteer for Friends of Florence Bach and modern French com- posers to life. With their popular instruments (sax, guitar, and ac- cordion) they generously mix in klezmer, tango, blues and exotic originals. The result is a satisfy- ing new world of possibilities. This is the second time that the library has been able to have the trio perform. If you saw then once you’ll want to see them again, and if you haven’t heard them perform, you’re in for a real treat. Don’t miss this wonderful day time concert open to the general public! South American Potluck The Friends of the Library will be hosting a South American Potluck immediately following the Terra Nova Trio in the library lobby. Come for the concert and then stay for some delicious food or just stop in around 3 p.m. and have a bite. Library Roof Work Visitors to the library will no- tice that roof replacement work is moving right along at the Flor- ence location. The roofers have begun the tile replacement and area working on our cupola. Please be patient as the con- struction continues and alert for parking lot disruptions and noise and dust. If it gets too noisy while you are reading or working in the library, stop by the circulation desk for a free pair of earplugs. The nonprofit Friends of Florence, which provides free bus transportation for cancer patients, is seeking volunteer drivers. For more info, call 541-997-8663.
