Beat the dog days of fishing
Oregon Department of Fish &
Wildlife has released its Recre-
ation Report with tips for sum-
mer fi shing, sage-grouse permits
and hunter education.
Fishing can get a little tough
during these hot summer days
— water temperatures increase,
aquatic weed growth accelerates,
and fi sh get lethargic.
Here are some ideas to help
you beat the dog days of fi shing:
• Fish early in the morning
when waters are cooler, and fi sh
are more active.
• Look for fi sh in deeper water,
where it’s cooler.
• Focus on warm water species
like bass, crappie, bluegill and
walleye.
• Travel to higher elevation
lakes and streams where the wa-
ter, and you, will be cooler.
• Consider a trip to the coast
where ocean and bay fi shing
hold up throughout the summer.
Th e fall hunting season will be
here before you know it. Hunt-
er education is required for all
hunters 18 and under, and is re-
quired for adult hunters in many
popular, nearby states. Sign
up now for a hunter education
course (online, workbook or tra-
ditional) or fi eld day.
Th e sage-grouse season is
eight days in September and is
open by permit only. Th e appli-
cation period is from July 1 to
Aug. 20.
Check page 17 of the 2018-19
Oregon Game Bird Regulations
for a list of open areas.
