Library to host Oregon
Dunes talk with local author
Local author and Ore-
gon Dunes enthusiast Dina
Pavlis will present a pro-
gram about the coastal sand
dunes, “The Oregon Dunes:
A Vanishing Landscape?” on
Saturday, July 14, at 1 p.m.,
in the Bromley Room of the
Siuslaw Public Library in
Florence, 1460 Ninth St.
This presentation is part of
the library’s Adult Summer
Reading “Libraries Rock”
program.
“The Oregon dunes span
more than 40 miles and are
important to coastal com-
munities, both economically
and ecologically,” said Pavlis.
“They delight residents and
the approximately 500,000
visitors who travel to see
them each year.”
These coastal land features
also support a plethora of
native plants and wildlife.
And the dunes are disap-
pearing before our eyes.
Pavlis, local author of “Se-
crets of the Oregon Dunes:
How Did All That Sand Get
Here, Anyway?” will share
her knowledge of this unique
landscape and what’s being
done to save the disappear-
ing dunes during her July 14
discussion at the library.
Pavlis has spent many
hours in the Oregon dunes.
Not only has she written
about the dunes, she is also a
Certified Interpretive Guide
(CIG), a volunteer for the
U.S. Forest Service in the
Oregon Dunes National
Recreation Area, an Oregon
Dunes Restoration Collabo-
rative member and an excep-
tional steward of the Oregon
Dunes.
There is no charge to at-
tend the event and all who
attend will receive informa-
tion about how to volunteer
for dunes restoration proj-
ects and about threatened
species protection efforts in
the Siuslaw Region.
The program is open to
the public and will appeal
to anyone who has explored
or wants to explore the flora,
fauna and varied landscapes
of the Oregon dunes.

Each year, law enforcement agencies
throughout Oregon and the nation
carry the “Flame of Hope” in support
of the Special Olympics and to bring
awareness to that cause. The event en-
gages law enforcement personnel to
champion the acceptance and inclu-
sion of those with intellectual disabil-
ities, through athletic empowerment
and participation.
On Friday, July 6, U.S. Coast Guard
Station Siuslaw River crew members
ran over 21 miles on Highway 101
from Gardiner, Ore., and through the
City of Florence, carrying the law en-
forcement torch for this leg of the re-
lay.
The torch was received from mem-
bers of Station Umpqua River, located
in Winchester Bay, and was passed to
members of Station Yaquina Bay, lo-
cated in Newport, this week.
For the three-mile trek through
Florence, beginning at the Siuslaw
River Bridge and heading north, the
crew was escorted by a Siuslaw Valley
Fire and Rescue engine driven by Fire-
fighter Rivas.
The 21-mile run was completed in
two shifts, with one group running
the portion from Gardiner to Florence
and a second group running the final
three miles through town.
USCG Chief Petty Officer Dan Niel-
sen, who organized local Coast Guard
personnel to participate, ran the entire
length of the 21-mile relay.
“I am honored to participate in and
partner with the community for this
event and thankful the unit was able to
fit this into its schedule again this year,
in support of the athletes competing in
the Special Olympics,” said Nielsen.
Participants included:
From Gardiner to Florence (18
miles): BMC Dan Nielsen, BM3 Josh
Bromund, MK3 Tyler Neyhart, SN
Sarah Hayes, FN Andrew Kullman, SN
Aiden Belevich, FN Kyle Kinzella and
SA Robby Kelly. Special appearance by
Piper.
Through Florence (3 miles): BMCS
Jay Nilles, BMC Kevin Smith, BMC
Dan Nielsen, MK1 Scott Harvey, MK2
Osburn and DC3 Rylan Burum.
