FUUF to discuss power
of subconscious Sunday
On Sunday, July 1, from 10
until 11 a.m., at the Florence
Unitarian Universalist Fellow-
ship, the Rev. Dr. Marcia Pearce
will lead the worship service.
Her topic will be “The Un-
seen Power of the Unconscious
Mind.”
A brief study of the work of
Carl Jung makes clear his belief
that, as long as people remain in
ignorance of the power of their
subconscious mind, it remains
a great unused force that can
prove either hazardous to their
welfare or bring all the wisdom
necessary to live a fulfilling life.
Pearce agrees with what spir-
itual psychologist Dr. Venice
Bloodworth once said, “We
are each bound by our own
consciousness, but above all
other living creatures, only the
human being has the power to
build himself up individually,
to create and express his own
unique and unseen power.
We are each building our own
world from within, and thought
is the builder, with the subcon-
scious as a powerful assist.”
The fellowship is located at

Beach Road and is wheelchair
accessible.

refreshments and a dialogue
circle to explore the questions
that come up during each wor-
ship service.

Spirituali-Tea focuses on
America, prayer Monday
On Monday, July 2, beginning
at 6:30 p.m., all are invited to
join a group of people who enjoy
finding the common grounds in
diverse spiritual thoughts and

ca and a Prayer,” written by

The prospect of being unable
to respond to a serious event
due to a department’s inabili-
ty to get to equipment, or the
possibility that first responders
would be trapped or killed in
the stations where they work,
is a real concern for the lead-
ership team of local emergency
organizations, including Siu-
slaw Valley Fire and Rescue
(SVFR) and Western Lane Am-
bulance District (WLAD).
According to recent reports,
the structural integrity of some
of the buildings that currently
house Florence’s emergency re-
sponse equipment is unlikely
to withstand a serious seismic
event.
However, there is a likeli-
hood, thanks to grant funding
received by SVFR and WLAD,
that many of those buildings
will now remain standing.
The Seismic Rehabilitation
Grant Program is a competitive
grant program in Oregon that
provides funding for the seis-
mic rehabilitation of critical
public buildings, particularly
public schools and emergency
services facilities.
The leadership team of
SVFR and WLAD has been
considering the prospect of a
serious earthquake for years
and has taken numerous steps
to address the possibility of a
seismic event wreaking havoc
on Florence and the surround-
ing communities.
One of the steps taken by the
departments was to complete
seismic upgrades that are paid
for with the funds available
through the Seismic Rehabili-
tation Grant Program.
One of the most important
areas of concern for SVFR/
WLAD Chief Director Jim
Langborg is the safety of his
team.

area designated as a Tsunami
Zone.
The process of applying for
the state’s Seismic Rehabilita-
tion Grants required that spe-
cific engineering information
be gathered and provided with
a department’s application.
Langborg believes the fore-
sight and approval of the SVFR
Board of Directors to spend
the money to compile the re-
ports requested was critical in
obtaining the grants from the
state.
“The SVFR and WLAD
boards of directors consider
our fire and ambulance stations
critical infrastructure, and
wants to ensure we are ready
to serve the public in their time
of need,” Langborg said. “This
is why the boards directed our
staff to apply for these grants
and committed to making the
initial investment of approxi-
mately $35,000 to complete the
required engineering reports to
qualify for the grant.”
He added, “I think it was
money well spent.”
The investment the chief
recommended be made by
the SVFR/WLAD has paid
off admirably for residents of
Florence. With the newly rein-
forced buildings to shelter and
protect equipment and per-
sonnel, Florence’s emergency
buildings have a much better
chance of remaining standing
and operational in the event of
an earthquake or other disaster.

Siuslaw River Bridge east
sidewalk remains closed
Everyone celebrating the
Fourth of July in Florence is re-
minded that the Siuslaw River
Bridge east sidewalk remains
closed for construction. The
west sidewalk is open to all to
enjoy the walk and the view.
The Siuslaw River Bridge Pro-
tection Project has been repair-
ing damaged concrete, applying
a surface coating to protect the
structure from corrosion, add-
ing sidewalk features, installing
seismic upgrades and replacing
bridge railings.
Much of the project is com-
plete.
The east sidewalk is closed
because work continues on the
bridge railings and there are
tripping and other work zone
hazards.
The project is on schedule to
be completed in 2019.
Volunteer drivers wanted
Friends of Florence, a 501(c)
(3) nonprofit organization, is
seeking volunteer drivers.
For over 32 years, Friends of
Florence has provided free bus
transportation for cancer pa-
tients traveling from Florence
to Eugene and Springfield, and
back.
The bus operates Monday
through Friday, 52 weeks per
year. Volunteers typically drive
once a month, with a time com-
mitment of approximately five
hours; 7:30 a.m. to noon.
A commercial driver’s license
is not required.

tions and the WLAD building
near PeaceHealth Peace Har-
bor Medical Center will help to
insure both departments’ abili-
ty to do their job — which will
hopefully keep area emergency
crews alive and able to answer
calls.
“The seismic upgrades are
intended to ensure our fire
and ambulance stations not
only survive a Cascadia earth-
quake, but are useable after the
quake,” Langborg said. “Imme-
diately after an earthquake, our
emergency equipment now will
be able to respond to the emer-
gencies created by the event.”
In addition, the buildings’
work will not stop after the ini-
tial callout.
“After the first 72 hours, our
community will transition into
a recovery mode and these im-
portant buildings can be used
to house federal and state re-
sources, hospitals or whatever
is need to get our communi-
ty back on its feet,” Langborg
said. “These stations will also
continue to serve our citizens
as the local fire and emergency
service provider.”
The type of upgrades made
with the grant funds differed at
each location.
Currently, the addition of
steel plating to reinforce weight
bearing walls and roofs and the
sinking of super strong helical
piers, or steel pins, to reinforce
foundations and substruc-
ture has been completed at
the Sutton, Canary, Clearlake
and North Fork stations. Sim-
ilar work is wrapping up at the
WLAD headquarters.
“The total amount we re-
ceived for our upgrades was
more than $700,000,” Langborg
said. “We are just completing
the work and we expect to be
well under budget.”

stations were eligible for grants,
