Over the weekend, the public got a chance to see the Central Oregon Coast Amateur Radio Club (COCARC) partici-
pate in its annual ARRL Field Day activities, a nationwide event during which COCARC members establish and staff
four amateur radio stations at the site across from the Siuslaw Valley Fire Station at 2625 Highway 101. The activity
ran from 11 a.m. on Saturday and operated continuously for 24 hours until 11 a.m. Sunday. The exercise tests the
readiness of amateur radio operators to assist in emergency and disaster situations. It focuses on developing skills
to meet the challenges of emergency preparedness as well as to acquaint the general public with the capabilities of
amateur radio. For more, contact Field Day Chairperson Bob Pine at 541-590-2110 or k6rmp@yahoo.com.
19th annual July Fourth Pie Sale in Yachats next week
On Wednesday, July 4, the
Yachats Ladies Club will host
their annual July Fourth Pie
and Ice Cream Social starting at
10:30 a.m. and continues until
the pie is gone. The event will
take place at the Yachats Ladies
Clubhouse at 286 W. Third St. in
Yachats.
For the 19th year, Yachats La-
dies Club members have been
baking homemade pies in antic-
ipation of the event, which in-
cludes an old-fashioned pie and
ice cream social.
Each serving is a sixth of a pie
for $4, with ice cream added for
$1. Large brownies will also be
served for $3 each, along with
coffee for $1.
To-go boxes are available.
The large selection of pies
available include apple, berry,
peach and cherry. There will be
many other fruit pies and cream
pies from which to choose. In
addition, there will only be a few
of the specialty pies, including
lemon meringue, pineapple, pe-
can, key lime, turtle, chocolate,
coconut, sugar free and gluten
free, so come early for the best
selection.
All told, approximately 100
handmade pies will be available
for purchase on display tables
lined up along the west wall of
the Ladies Clubhouse, creating
nearly 40 linear feet with a shelf
holding two levels of pie slices.
The “pie river” continues
along the south end of the build-
ing with brownies and more pies
leading to the counter with a
display of assorted cream pies.
Cutters arrive at 7:3 0 a.m. to
start slicing pies into six serv-
ings per pie. Then slices are
plated, labeled and placed on
