SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27, 2018 | 11A First RAIN Startup Weekend planned for mid-July The Oregon coast is getting a Startup Weekend of its own. A hallmark event in metropolitan entrepreneurial communities, Florence will host the region’s first-ever Startup Weekend on July 13 and 14. Startup Weekend Oregon Coast will bring together entre- preneurs and startup enthusiasts to share ideas, form teams and learn what it takes to launch a business venture. It is sponsored by Oregon Pa- cific Bank; produced by Oregon RAIN (Regional Accelerator and Innovation Network), Lane Small Business Development Center, City of Florence, Pure Organic Energy; and supported by the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce and TechStars. “This is an exciting new mile- stone for our region’s innovation economy. A Startup Weekend is unheard of in a community of this size,” said Florence City Manager Erin Reynolds. “How- ever, our entrepreneurs and stakeholders are exceptionally eager and willing participants, and it’s a credit to them that we can endeavor to host this event.” Startup Weekend Oregon Coast begins on Friday, July 13. On the first day, after dinner and networking time, participants gather to pitch business ideas. Attendees then vote on the best pitches and form teams based on which project they want to work on. On day two, teams will learn from local mentors as they de- velop a prototype of their busi- ness. The event concludes Sat- urday night when teams present their projects to the audience and a panel of experts. Oregon RAIN Coastal Ven- ture Catalyst David Youngentob said, “There are many potential benefits of a startup weekend. Of course, we may see a team that Ice Cream Social leaves the event with plans to launch a company. But each and every participant will meet other innovators who could become future business partners, network with experienced entrepreneurs, and truly learn what it takes to launch a business venture. “The goal is to experience core process of business discov- ery, from company concept to customer research and initial business prototyping. It can hap- pen in just over 24 hours, and it will at this event for all our at- tendees.” Startup Weekend tickets are on sale at go.startupweekend. org/florence. Earlybird prices — gener- al tickets for 2 $ 5 and student tickets for $15 — are available through July 1. Admission includes three meals, benefits and discounts, expert speakers, networking op- portunities and unlimited inter- net and coffee. By Mark Brennan Siuslaw News Siuslaw Valley Fire and Res- cue (SVFR) responded with multiple engines on the evening of June 25 to a small electrical fire in Historic Old Town Flor- ence. The fire was contained quickly and SVFR first respond- ers were able to ensure the fire did not spread. SVFR Chief Director Jim Langborg said the department was concerned that the fire was in a busy part of town and that the characteristics of the fire were at first unknown. “We sent three engines to the location, because when you hear a call of a fire in Old Town, we are not going to take any chanc- es,” he said. “The location of the fire, under Mo’s Restaurant, was also a reason for concern.” According to Langborg, the fire was apparently caused by a breakdown of an electrical component, which overheated and started to smoke, starting a small fire under the wooden docks at Mo’s, 1436 Bay St. Employees from Mo’s initially spotted the smoke and said they saw flames. The employees took action to spray the area with a fire extinguisher, putting out the fire. “When our personnel arrived, they soaked the site of the fire, just to make sure there weren’t any further problems,” Lang- borg said. It is now fire season in Or- egon, and people are encour- aged to use extra care as the weather remains warm and dry. This is especially important as fireworks retail sales are open through Friday, July 6. State Fire Marshal Jim Walker said, “Regulations limit where fireworks may be used. Fire risk in Oregon is approaching ex- treme conditions and there is no room for error in fireworks safety.” A fireworks safety brochure is available at www.oregon.gov/ OSP/SFM/docs/Licensing_ permits/fireworks/4BesFire works.pdf.
