There are some nice cut-

Many athletes can
refl ect back to their
athletic days and iden-
tify the coach who
most inspired them.
My coach was Frank
Buckiewicz at Pacifi c
University. He was the
guest speaker at the
Warrenton
football
banquet in 1969.
His talk was directed
to the 2-7 Warrenton
team. He was enthu-
siastic and passionate
about football and life.
Soon aft er he began
speaking, I wanted to
attend Pacifi c Univer-
sity and if possible play
football for this man.
As it turned out Coach
Buckiewicz, hereaft er
only being referred to
as Coach, became my
seventh football coach
in seven years.
He would also be my
last football coach.
Coach demonstrat-
ed the personality and
character traits im-
portant for us to have.

passes on my fi rst day

Commission declines uplisting of murrelets
Survival guidelines will still be adopted to encourage conservation on state lands
The
ODFW
Commission
declined to uplist the marbled mur-
relets from threatened to endan-
gered during its meeting in Baker
City earlier this weekin a split 4-2
vote Thursday.
The commission did ask staff to
bring modified survival guidelines
for marbled murrelets back, with
some language reworked to reflect
suggestions heard from people who
testified art the June 7 meeting.
The guidelines will encourage
conservation efforts on state-man-
aged lands.
Commissioners who voted in
favor of not uplisting this seabird
noted Oregon State University
researchers are in year two of a
state-funded 10-year study of mar-
bled murrelets.
“Let’s wait a few years and let sci-
entists update us on how this spe-
cies is doing,” said Chair Mike
Finley.
The commission heard testimony
from more than 30 people, includ-
ing several county commissioners
from coastal communities con-
cerned about the economic impact
of the decision.
