B ACKSTREET G ALLERY Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St., has been in business for 13 years. A birthday party will be held on June 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. Th e an- nual “Bots and Beguiling Beings” Community Challenge Art Show, and an award to Siuslaw High School senior Karmen Trebolo, will also be celebrated — and you are invited. Trebolo received a $500 art scholarship. She worked to create the high school yearbook and is an accomplished art student with a fl air for drawing. She plans to pursue a career in biomedical en- gineering. She will also continue improving her photography skills. With some striking art from Trebolo and Backstreet members, there will also be plenty of “Bots and Beings” to help Backstreet celebrate. Be prepared for plenty of food, drink, entertainment and fun during the reception. Backstreet Gallery has come a long way from their humble beginnings on Laurel Street in a tiny house, which had also been a bakery. Since then, Backstreet has moved twice, with plenty of upgrades along the way. Although it is always a work in progress to bring fresh new ideas and art, the gallery has been selected several times as the best gallery in Flor- ence. Th e members wish to thank past and present members for making the gallery one of the nicest in the northwest, as well as loyal customers and performers who continue to make the gallery a success. Toepher found “the joy and cre- ativity of watercolor” after moving to Oregon in 1989. Before that, she lived in Southern California, where she was co-founder of Pick- le Barrel Crafts, selling fabric and decorative paintings at craft shows and street fairs. F LORENCE R EGIONAL A RTS A LLIANCE (FRAA) D RAGON A RT S TUDIOS In June, some of Florence’s youngest artists will be display- ing their work in their very own gallery show at Dragon Art Studios on Highway 101 in Florence. The Dragon Art Illustration Club’s first art show began with a reception. “These young artists have been working on their characters for several months, and have each created a three-panel story se- quence to share,” said Dragon Art Instructor Kassy Keppol. “Come to the gallery to see the work of our youngest artists.” Dragon Art will also be holding sessions on arts, crafts and sewing. For more information, visit www. kassykeppol.com. See these works and more by local artists during the 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour. F LORENCE E VENTS C ENTER Florence Events Center will be displaying the paintings of three accomplished artist from the Yachats Art Guild during the month of June in Galleries One and Five. The artists showcased will be Carol Summers, Jowanna Gosselin and Nina Toepher. Summers said that her paint- ings are inspired by “a love of flowers, an interest in the energy of people and places and an appre- ciation for ancient structures.” Her medium of watercolor al- lows endless experiments in light, color, and form. Gosselin is a Florence resident who loves painting and is a mem- ber of the Yachats Art Guild and the Society of Decorative Paint- ing. She enjoys painting flowers, birds, and butterflies, and creating “whimsical critters.” THIS WEEK ON THE FRAA artists and the Friends of the FEC Gallery Committee are preparing for the “Spirit of Summer,” with an open-ended call to artists. This is an opportunity for lo- cal artists to share their artwork during the months of July and August in FEC’s Galleries One and Five. Additionally, artists will have the opportunity to win one of three People’s Choice Awards for prize money. Another exciting part of this exhibit will be “Patrons of the Artists,” who will agree to pur- chase a piece of artwork and will be honored at a July reception. The “Spirit of Summer” theme offers endless possibilities and the committee welcomes 2D and 3D art. The fee to participate in this exhibit is $35 per rod for up to three pieces of 2D art, and the same for three pieces of 3D art. Applications are available at fraaoregon.org and eventcenter. org and are due June 22. S TUDIOS AT J AYNE S MOLEY D ESIGN Th e Studios, 1458 First St., fea- tures artist Tamara Angeney-Kime in June.
