Backstreet Gallery celebrates
13 years this Saturday
“No one could imagine 13 years ago when several artists
met at a former bakery in Florence, Ore., that Backstreet
Gallery would be so successful,” said Meredith Draper,
president of the gallery. “The result was something new in
galleries for Florence.”
Backstreet Gallery, located at 1421 Bay St. in Historic
Old Town Florence, is an artist co-operative and has been
that way for the past 13 years.
All the artist/members share the work to manage the
co-op as a place to show and market their art.
Many members, past and present, have worked together
to make Backstreet Gallery one of the best galleries in the
Northwest.
The founding members began the gallery with passion,
perseverance and vision, which attracted new talents and
made it what it is today.
“Because a number of creative people designed this
business, they not only have benefitted themselves but also
the community,” Draper said. “It is a place where art can
be enjoyed and shared by all who come to visit. Backstreet
attracts not only locals, but examining the guest book is
like a trip around the world.”
As a work in progress, every day members discover new
ways to make the gallery more engaging.
The community is invited to join members on Saturday,
June 9, from 3 to 5 p.m., for the Backstreet Birthday Cel-
ebration.
This is in conjunction with the Annual Community
Challenge Show, ‘Bots and Beguiling Beings; a special
showing of work by Karmen Trebolo, Siuslaw High School
recipient of a $500 art scholarship awarded by the gallery;
and the 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour. There will be refresh-
ments and live music by Denny Weaver.
“There are all sorts of reasons to stop by on June 9, and
many more to stop in anytime,” Draper said.
Backstreet Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

SHS students awarded $230,000 in scholarships
Once again, the greater Flor-
ence community came out to
support local students and their
educational aspirations. On May
24, local community groups and
organizations awarded $232,450
in local scholarships to 50 grad-
uating seniors to attend college,
community college or other ca-
reer training programs.
“Scholarship Night is as much
a tribute to our community as
it is to the commitment of our
students as they strive to achieve
their goals and make the world a
better place for all in the future,”
said Siuslaw School District Su-
perintendent Andy Grzeskowiak.
Siuslaw High School acknowl-
edged both the student awardees
and the generosity of the orga-
nizations that made scholar-
ship night the success that it has
grown to become over the years.

“Without the assistance of so
many in our community, the
dreams of local students would
be harder to reach,” Grzeskowiak
said.
