Lane Community College-Florence honors three faculty members
Lane Community College
(LCC) honored three LCC
Florence Center faculty on
May 30 at its 2018 Employ-
ee Recognition Gala held in
the Center for Meeting and
Learning on the main Eugene
campus. The honored instruc-
tors were Carrie Newell, Mary
Coville and John Arle.
Newell is officially retiring
June 30, though staff hope to
still see her around the Flor-
ence Center in days ahead. She
has worked with gray whales
and other marine mammals
for more than 25 years and is
the founder of the Whale, Sea
Life and Shark Museum in De-
poe Bay that also offers Whale
Research Eco Excursions. She
teaches marine biology and
related science courses at the
LCC Florence Center.
Coville was honored for
her 20 years of service to the
college. She has a Ph.D. from
Oregon State University and
has taught chemistry at the
Florence Center for the past
several years as a much-loved
instructor.
Arle has now been with
LCC for 10 years, another

milestone worthy of recogni-

John has spent well over four
decades as an innovative sci-
ence instructor. At the LCC
Florence Center, John has de-
veloped a strong cadre of stu-
dents who appreciate his hy-
brid anatomy and physiology
classes.
“I am incredibly proud of
the great work our faculty do
every day on our local cam-
pus,” noted Russ Pierson, dean
of the LCC Florence Center.
“It is an honor to serve the
greater Florence community
and the entire Siuslaw region
with remarkable professionals
exemplified by Carrie, Mary
and John.”

Strawberries,
asparagus,
squash and salad greens — not
to mention bedding plants,
flowering baskets and fresh-
cut flowers — are just a few fa-
vorites of spring’s agricultural
bounty in Oregon.
But if you want to venture out
into the country, where can you
buy directly from the source?
Oregon’s Bounty is a search-
able directory of nearly 300
family farms and ranches that
sell food and foliage directly to
the public.
The program allows visitors
to do keyword searches for
specific agriculture products
— such as berries, cauliflower,
honey or eggs — and/or search
for farms within a specific re-
gion of the state. Visitors can
also do a keyword search for
“u-pick” or “events” to find
farms that offer those activities.
Each of the farms listed in
Oregon’s Bounty are owned and
operated by Farm Bureau mem-
bers.
The state’s largest gener-
al farm organization, Oregon
Farm Bureau is a grassroots,
nonpartisan, nonprofit organi-
zation representing the interests
of the state’s farmers and ranch-
ers in the public and policy-
making arenas.
