Book Review
“The Undoing Project”
by Michael Lewis
In “The Undoing Project” by Michael
Lewis, the author tells the story of how
a Nobel Prize-winning theory of the
mind altered our perception of reality.
Forty years ago, Israeli psychologists
Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky
wrote a series of breathtakingly orig-
inal studies undoing our assumptions
about the decision-making process.
Their papers showed the ways in which
the human mind erred, systematical-
ly, when forced to make judgments in
uncertain situations. Their worked cre-
ated the field of behavioral economics,
revolutionized Big Data studies, ad-
vanced evidence-based medicine, led
to a new approach to government reg-
ulation and made much of Lewis’s own
work possible. Kahneman and Tversky
are more responsible than anybody for
the powerful trend to mistrust human
intuition and defer to algorithms.
“The Undoing Project” is about a com-
pelling collaboration between two men
who have the dimensions of great liter-
ary figures. They became heroes in the
university and on the battlefield — both
had important careers in the Israe-
li military — and their research was
deeply linked to their extraordinary
life experiences.
Tversky was a brilliant, self-confi-
dent warrior and extrovert, the cen-
ter of rapt attention in any room;
Kahneman, a fugitive from the Nazis in
his childhood, was an introvert whose
questing self-doubt was the seedbed
of his ideas. They became one of the
greatest partnerships in the history
of science, working together so close-
ly that they couldn’t remember whose
brain originated which ideas, or should
claim credit. They flipped a coin to de-
cide the lead authorship on the first pa-
per they wrote, and simply alternated
thereafter.
This story about the workings of the
human mind is explored through the
personalities of two fascinating in-
dividuals so fundamentally different
from each other that they seem unlike-
ly friends or colleagues. In the process
they may well have changed, for good,
mankind’s view of its own mind.
Lewis is the best-selling author of
“Liar’s Poker,” “Moneyball,” “The Blind
Side” and “Flash Boys.”
Summer Reading
Starts Friday
Registration for the library’s Summer
Reading program starts this Friday,
June 1.
“Libraries Rock!” is the theme of
this year’s summer reading program
for children, teens and adults — and
the excitement is building. All kind of
wonderful programs are planned and a
lot of books will be read!
Endowment Books
On Thursday, June 7, at 1 p.m., Li-
FRAA issues call to artists for ‘Spirit of Summer’
Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA),
and Friends of the Florence Event Center
(FEC) are sponsoring an opportunity for lo-
cal artists to share their artwork during the
months of July and August in Galleries One
and Five at the Florence Events Center.
Additionally, artists will have the oppor-
tunity to win one of three People’s Choice
Awards. The award for 1st place will be $250,
2nd place is $150 and 3rd place $100.
Another part of the exhibit will be “Patrons
of the Artists,” who will agree to purchase a
piece of 2-D or 3-D artwork and will be hon-
ored at an Artist’s Reception on Wednesday,
July 11, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The open-ended theme “Spirit of Sum-
mer” offers endless possibilities. The show
welcomes 2-D (paintings, photography and
mixed media) and 3-D art (jewelry, pottery,
ceramics, mosaics, wood, stained glass etc.)
The fee to participate in this exhibit is $35.
per rod for up to three pieces of 2-D art, and
the same for three pieces of 3-D art.
Applications are being accepted on a “first-
come” basis, until the galleries and case are
full.
The entry deadline is June 22.

ment books, the purchase of which is
made possible by contributions to the
Siuslaw Public Library’s Endowment
Fund, administered by Western Lane
Community Foundation.
The Endowment Fund was estab-
lished in the early 1990’s with a contri-
bution from the Friends of the Library,
which has made successive contribu-
tions since then, as well as have numer-
ous individual donors. Each year the
book purchases increase and so this
year only a selection of the books will
be displayed.
Attendees will get the first chance to
view and check out some wonderful
new library books. Don’t miss it!

Peace Harbor volunteers
to host lunch, install new
officers June 16
The volunteers at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Hospital will
install new officers at the next luncheon meeting on Thurs-
day, June 21, at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St.
The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m., and reservations are
required for lunch.
Reservations must be made before June 16 by calling Rosa-
lie at 541-902-1368 or emailing womangolfer7@gmail.com.
The volunteers will next meet in September.
The PeaceHealth Peace Harbor volunteers are current-
ly restructuring the duties and management in the hospital
gift shop. They welcome new volunteers to help take charge.
Applications are always available at the volunteer desk in the
hospital lobby.
In addition, the Peace Harbor Gift Shop has scheduled an
“overstock sale” for June 28 and 29, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., in
Conference Room C by the cafeteria.
People are encouraged to mark their calendars for that
Thursday and Friday, and to be ready for bargains on all
manner of gifts.
