T HE R ECORD
OBITUARIES
RITCHIE—A l Ritchie, 85,
of Florence, died May 13,
2018.
Al was born and grew up in
Globe, Ariz. He was married
to Helen Ritchie, who sur-
vives him, for 47 years. He
was a gifted and unique man
with a sharp-witted sense of
humor.
He will be missed by many
people.
He earned a bachelor’s
degree in journalism and a
master’s degree in mass com-
munications at San Jose State
University.
He also earned a master’s
degree in science, technology
and public policy at Indiana
University.
Al was a master of many
skills. One of his early expe-
riences was in the aerospace
industry as a tool and die
maker, and later a proposal
writer. After moving to Indi-
ana, he had his own engineer-
ing shop, where he designed
and built complex tools.
Al was also a prolific writer
and photographer. He wrote
for various popular publi-
cations that included mo-
torcycle, nature and weekly
magazines. While working
with Indiana governor Edgar
Whitcomb, he wrote “The
Whitcomb Years.”
Many thought he was an in-
POLICE
novative, mechanical savant.
There was little he could not
accomplish. He built his own
home in Indiana using his
many skills to do all phases of
construction by himself.
Repurposing was a spe-
cialty; he converted his old
Volkswagen into an efficient,
hydraulic wood splitter, for
example. The wood helped
heat the house during cold
Indiana winters.
During his life, Al was an
avid speed and hill climb mo-
torcycle enthusiast. He also
enjoyed deep sea diving, even
trading air tanks with Jacques
Cousteau, skiing, reading and
photography.
Many of his escapades lent
themselves to hilarious sto-
ries.
There will be no services.
For those wishing to com-
memorate his life, send do-
nations to the Oregon Coast
Humane Society in Florence
in lieu of flowers.

Local, state Law enforcement to continue ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign
Law enforcement across Ore-
gon is reminding motorists and
their passengers about Oregon
laws during a campaign that fo-
cuses on using the right safety re-
straints, including for those sub-
ject to Oregon’s newest occupant
protection law:
• Children under age two must
use a child seat with harness in
a rear-facing position unless the
child turned one year of age prior
to May 26, 2017.

May 26, 2017, must continue to
ride in a car seat with harness or
in a booster until they reach age
eight or 4 feet, 9 inches in height
and the adult belt fits them cor-
rectly.
Why buckle up? Because stud-
ies show using the proper re-
straint can reduce the risk of ma-
jor injury or death by 65 percent.
Yet in Oregon in 2016, crash
data shows lack of a safety belt
or a child restraint system was
a factor in 26 percent of the 343
motor vehicle occupant deaths
— that’s 89 lives that might have
been saved had they buckled up
correctly. It’s a survival tip worth
taking seriously.
Oregon Department of Trans-
portation (ODOT), law en-
forcement and safety advocates
encourage all users of the trans-
portation system to take personal
responsibility for being safe.
Be sure to use child safety seats
correctly (see your manufactur-
er’s guidebook, or visit a safety
seat check station.).
Buckle up day and night, no
matter what vehicle you’re in or
where you’re going. Don’t drive
impaired and put the distractions
away when you are behind the
wheel, on your bicycle or walking
in a busy area. Extra law enforce-
ment, funded by a grant from
ODOT’s Transportation Safety
Division, is on the lookout.
