Memorial Day Observances
to be held Monday
Memorial Day will be ob-
served this year on Monday, May
28.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
3232 invites the public to join
them at three events being held
that day to recognize the sacrifice
made by veterans that have per-
ished while defending America.
At 7 a.m., members of Post
3232 and the VFW Honor Guard
will gather at the Pacific Sunset
Cemetery to honor Memorial
Day. The recognition will con-
sist of a ceremonial raising of the
flag to the top of the flagpole and
then lowered to half-staff as Taps
is played.
At noon the flag will be raised
to full staff.
At 8 a.m. the group will be
placing white crosses and Amer-
ican flags at all veteran’s grave
sites. The public is invited to help
with this annual honoring.
At 1 p.m., Memorial Day ser-
vices will be held at the Veteran’s
Memorial Park in Old Town.
United States Coast Guard
Station Siuslaw River will be par-
ticipating in the ceremonies hon-
oring those that have perished
defending freedom by placing
memorial wreaths on the Siuslaw
River at this time.
Floral wreaths may be placed
at the park prior to the service
for proper laying of the wreath by
the Coast Guard.
Beachcomber Days
returning to Waldport
Get ready for Beachcomber
Days 2018, in downtown Wald-
port, Ore., from June 15-17.
This year’s three-day festi-
val will include new events, in-
cluding Bed Races, a pie-eating
contest, slug races and a frozen
T-shirt contest.
More than 25 vendors will be
on site throughout the weekend,
offering everything from foods
and sweet treats to arts and crafts,
jewelry, clothing and more.
Waldport Beachcomber Days
is a nonprofit organization. The
event raises funds by selling
raffle tickets for treasure chests
prizes, sponsorship advertising
for local businesses as well as
generous donations from com-
munity members and long-time
residents.
This event has historically
awarded scholarships to high
school juniors and seniors.
Come show community sup-
port and local scholarships.

"'Jewel of a Park' To Reopen May
24" in the Saturday, May 19 edi-
tion, it was stated that the park
was "acquired" by the city, im-
plying the park came under the
city's ownership; the park was
technically annexed, meaning
Lane County still owns the park
and is responsible for running
and maintaining it.

“Disappearance at Devil’s Rock” is the
latest from best-selling author Paul Trem-
blay, whose previous novel “A Head Full of
Ghosts” received critical acclaim.
Late one summer night, Elizabeth Sand-
erson receives the devastating news that
every mother fears: her 13-year-old son,
Tommy, has vanished without a trace in the
woods of a nearby state park.
The search isn’t yielding any answers,
and Elizabeth and her 11-year-old daugh-
ter, Kate, struggle to comprehend Tommy’s
disappearance. Feeling helpless and alone,
their sorrow is compounded by anger and
frustration.

is a good place to pick up some great sum-
mer reading at bargain prices.
Books for sale come from donations as
well as books weeded from the library’s col-
lection. And, as always throughout the year,
the Friends accept donations of all kinds of
books, DVDs, and CDs.
Proceeds from the book sale go to sup-
port the library.
Libraries Rock!
Libraries Rock! is the theme of this
year’s summer reading program for chil-
dren, teens and adults, and the excitement
is building. All kind of wonderful programs
are planned and a lot of books will be read.
Look for additional information in Tid-
ings and at the library.
Registration will start June 1.
Holiday Closure
The library will be closed on Monday,
May 28, in honor of Memorial Day. The
library wishes you all a safe and happy hol-

Yachats Ladies preparing for annual pie & Ice Cream Social
The 17th Annual Memorial
Weekend Pie & Ice Cream Social
on Saturday, May 26, produced
by The Yachats Ladies Club, will
be at the Yachats Ladies Club-
house, 286 W Third Str., at the
corner of Pontiac St., in Yachats.
Pie will be served from 11 a.m.
until it is gone. Come early for
best selection. This is the first of
the three pie socials per summer
season produced by the Club.
The next pie and ice cream so-
cial will be Wednesday, July 4.
There will be a wide selection
of pies, all made by club mem-
bers including varieties of apple,
berry, peach and cherry. There
will be other fruit pies and many
cream pies including lemon
meringue, key lime and cherry
cream cheese pie will be available
as well Shoo Fly pie.
Slices are a sixth of a pie and
are $4 each. Large brownies are
$3. Add ice cream for just $1.
Coffee and tea are $1.
To-go boxes are available so
take some home for later.
The scholarship quilt will be
on display and raffle tickets will
be available for sale.
The Yachats Ladies Club is an
active service club for women of
Lincoln County who enjoy cre-
ating events that raise funds for
community nonprofit groups.
