Vet Wall bricks
Siuslaw High School symphonic band hits high
note with seventh place at state competition
The deadline for submitting
applications for placing the
name of a veteran, or an indi-
vidual on active duty, on a brick
in the Veteran’s Memorial Park
will be May 31.
Applications are available at
the Chamber of Commerce,
Patriot Place, 175 Nopal St.,
and at the Veterans Memorial
Park on Bay Street, in the after-
noons during Rhody weekend.
Placement of the personal-
ized bricks will take place this
July.
The cost of a brick is $75,
which is tax deductible, with a
limited number of spaces cur-
rently available.

Garden Club
celebrates
growing season
Florence Garden Club cel-
ebrated the growing season
with locals at their annual Plant
Sale and Marketplace last Sat-
urday. Record sales from this
year’s event boosted the group’s
scholarship efforts for local stu-
dents. Congratulations to win-
ner, Bobbye Justet, who was the
high bidder of the club’s artful
potting bench.

Rowbotham said, “We placed
7th in the 4A Division at State.
That’s a major achievement,
given there are 40 Bands at the
4A level in Oregon.”
Director Rowbotham cred-
ited the support of the greater
Florence Community for the
continued success of 97J Bands.
“It’s a tribute to our students,
parents and volunteers — as
well as the members of the Flor-
ence Elks Lodge #1858, the Or-
egon Coast Military Museum,
Florence Rotary Club, Pacific
Coast Wind Ensemble, and so
many others.
“We couldn’t do it without
them.”
Sticks and Stone, Blue Heron Gallery exhibits at Visitor Center
More than two dozen pieces
of art, including photos, water-
colors, ceramics and sculptures
in metal and wood, are part of
a new art display at the Florence
Chamber of Commerce’s visitors
center this month.
The Chamber features a dif-
ferent local art exhibit each
month. Their current display of
local artistry features a variety
of works by local and North-
west artists from both Sticks and
Stones Gallery and The Blue
Heron Gallery in Old Town.

chamber’s monthly exhibit. We
appreciate the many ways that
the chamber supports Florence’s
growing and vibrant arts com-
munity.”
Butler says his three galleries,
entering their 29th year in Flor-
ence, are contemporary craft
galleries that focus on American
made craft.
“We are delighted to have a
sampling of Sticks and Stones
Gallery and The Blue Heron
Gallery’s collection on display
at the chamber’s visitor center
this month,” he said. “Each of
our galleries offers something
different. The variety found in
our galleries, and the other great
shops and galleries of Old Town,
sets Florence apart from other
communities where you go into
a half-dozen different shops and
find the same thing over and
over. There is a tremendous di-
versity of work in our commu-
nity.”
“The chamber is listed in the
local art tour map because of our
ever-changing displays of pho-
tography, paintings, or three-di-
mensional art by local artists and
galleries,” added Hannigan. “Art
is growing in its importance for
enhancing Florence’s tourism
business, and that helps all busi-
nesses.”
