City services utility bills
to be delayed until May 5
The City of Florence is cur-
rently updating its water-
meters throughout the city to a
radio frequency based auto-
matic meter reading system.
As it proceeds with this
upgrade, city staff have been
reviewing each individual
account to ensure that the new
system is reading the meters
correctly. This process has
caused a delay in mailing out
the May city services billings.
City finance and public
works staff are working with
its vendors to begin mailing

will be adjusted accordingly to
account for the delay in distri-
bution.

Florence Ladies of Elks donate
clothes to Roseburg Veterans
On April 16, Leo and
Shirley Stapleton delivered
donated clothing from the Levi
Store in Eugene, to the veter-
ans at the Roseburg Veterans
Hospital.
Included were women’s and
men’s clothing: 660 shirts, 251
pants, 19 hats, 9 scarfs, 1 lap
blanket and 6 sweat pants.
Elks give a thank you to
Sara Wells and the Stapleton’s
and Levi’s for arranging this
donation. The veterans truly
appreciate the gifts.

More than 200 members of the community, including Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 3232 and the Confederated Tribes, came to pay their respects and
appreciation during a memorial service held for Florence resident Wilbur E.
Ternyik, who passed away April 2. Pastor Lori Blake presided over the serv-
ice, which included the Posting of Colors, a Three-Gun Rifle Volley,
Presentation of the Flag to Joyce Ternyik, and both Opening and Closing
Service drumming tributes by tribal members in honor of Ternyik’s passing
and Native American heritage. Ternyik served several roles in local govern-
ment, including as Mayor of Florence, and chairman of the Oregon Coastal
Conservation and Development Commission (OCC&DC), which established
Oregon’s statewide land use planning system (SB100) in 1973.

The Dela Mora family has
announced that they are contin-
uing to offer a scholarship in
honor of their son, Jose Dela
Mora, and will be hosting a
taco feed to support the fund on
Sunday, May 6, starting at
noon.
The taco feed is being
cooked by the Dela Moras,
who own and operate Rosa’s
Mexican Restaurant, 2825
HIghway 101, and will be held
on May 6 from noon until they
sell out.
People will be able to buy
six tacos for $10.
This is a great after church
meal for families who can eat
in or grab their tacos and take
with them.
The feed will be held at
Crossroads Church at 1380
10th St., diagonal from the
Siuslaw Public Library.
The Jose Dela Mora scholar-
ship was established in the
spring of 2016, the year Jose
Dela Mora was to have gradu-
ated from Siuslaw High
