Book Review
“The Undertaker’s Daughter”

Already widowed by the age
of 40, Ilka Nichols Jensen, a
school portrait photographer,
leads a modest, regimented and
uneventful life in Copenhagen
— until unexpected news rocks
her quiet existence.
Her father, who walked out
on the family suddenly and
inexplicably more than three
decades ago, has died. And he’s
left her something in his will:
his funeral home — in Racine,
Wisc.
Clinging to this last shred of
communication from the father
she hasn’t heard from since
childhood, Ilka makes an
uncharacteristically rash deci-
sion and jumps on a plane to
Wisconsin. Desperate for a
connection to the parent she
never really knew, she plans to
visit the funeral home and go
through her father’s things —
hoping for some insight into his
new life in America before
preparing the business for a
quick sale.
But when she stumbles upon
an unsolved murder, and a
killer who seems to still be very
much alive, the undertaker’s
daughter realizes she might be
in over her head.

er deeply buried, and danger-
ous, secrets.
Book purchase requests
Are you anxious to be the
first to read the next Lee Child
book or the latest true-life
political exposé? Have you
noticed that the library seems
to be missing a particular book
in a young adult series?
Is there a new movie you
would like to see? Or a musi-
cian you’d like to hear?
Or is there a wonderful new
author you want the library to
know about?
Many of our patrons request
that the library purchase books,
DVDs, audiobooks and other
materials.
We receive requests in per-
son, on the phone, and through
our website. Each request is
assigned to the appropriate
staff member who purchases
for that area of the collection.
A couple of things we look at
are whether the book is fairly
new or published long ago?
Does the material fit within our
collection?
Sometimes it is determined
that the item is more easily
available through interlibrary
loan (more on that next week),
though the majority of requests
are purchased. Books are usu-
ally ordered twice monthly,
while audiobooks are ordered
more on a quarterly schedule.
Due to the quantity we can’t
respond individually to every
request, but we will notify
patrons once the item is avail-
able (either through purchase
or interlibrary loan) or if we are
ultimately unable to obtain the
item.

Genealogy Classes
The library will be offering
two very basic, introductory
family history classes in May.
Finding Your Roots will be on
Fri., May 11, from 1 to 3 p.m.
and Finding Records will be on
Friday, May 25, from 1 to 3
p.m.
These classes will introduce
basic genealogy concepts and
introduce library resources
available to the family histori-
an.
Both classes are limited to
10 participants so contact the

Ladies of Elks announce
annual scholarship winners
The Ladies of Elks of
Florence recently awarded a
total of $10,000 in scholar-
ships for the 2018-19 academ-
ic year to students residing
within the Siuslaw, Mapleton,
Triangle Lake and Reedsport
school districts.
Students submitted applica-
tions for judging on the basis
of scholastic achievement,
leadership, motivation,
extracurricular activities and
financial need.
A $4,000 scholarship was
awarded
to
Esmerelda
Cardoso of Reedsport.
Karmom Trebolo of Siuslaw
High School and Katelynn
Swift
of
Reedsport
Community Charter School
each received a $2,000 schol-
arship to assist them with stud-
ies at community college.
A continuing higher educa-
tion scholarship of $2,000 was
awarded to Zachary Burkhart,
a Siuslaw High School gradu-
ate, for his senior year at
Oregon State University.
Funds for these scholarships
are accumulated by the LOE
through fundraising projects
held throughout the year.
Learn about dowsing
theory, practice Saturday
This Saturday, April 28, the
public is invited to a dowsing
workshop being held in the
Siuslaw Public Library’s
Bromley Room, from 2 to 4
p.m.
The facilitator will be John
Stead, who wil discuss dows-
ing theory and practice. The
workshop will be hands-on,
with all tools being provided.
Learn how to locate what is
underground, including drain
pipes, water pipes, septic sys-
tems, water and wires.
According to the US
Geological Service, “[water]
dowsing has been a subject of
discussion and controversy for
hundreds, if not thousands, of
years, including cave paintings
in northwestern Africa that are
6,000 to 8,000 years old.”
