FACIALS
Road repair work closes South Jetty parking temporarily
South Jetty No. 7 parking
area outside of Florence will
receive improvements this
week. The end of South Jetty
Road and the South Jetty No. 7
parking area will be closed to
vehicles from April 19 through
Tuesday, April 24, while local
contractors repair and resurface
the parking area.
Visitors may access the crab
dock and beach by foot but are
encouraged to use caution as
they may encounter heavy
equipment and road flaggers
throughout the weekend.
This project was initiated by
Conway Pebley, one of the
Siuslaw National Forest’s
VetsWork
interns,
an
AmeriCorps program hosted
by the Mt. Adams Institute. As
part of the program, each intern
must complete a Community
Assistance Project in the local
area where they are assigned.
When he first arrived,
Conway visited South Jetty and
saw how popular the area is.
He also noted an opportunity to
improve the parking area,
which was full of large pot-
holes. “It was instantly appar-
ent to me that this is what I
wanted to do for my
Community Assistance
Project,” said Conway. “I saw
how many people were using
the area and I didn’t even feel
comfortable driving my high
clearance vehicle through the
parking lot.”
Central Coast District
Ranger Michele Jones said,
“This program is really win-
win. We get great people to
come help us accomplish
important work and the interns
get valuable experience to help
them transition to civilian life.”
The VetsWork program
offers 11-month career devel-
opment internships for military
veterans interested in natural
resources, land management
and the environmental sector.
VetsWork participants are
placed at local, state and feder-
al land management agencies
such as the U.S. Forest Service,
where they provide project
support while learning about
various career paths.
