Florence Police plan DUII enforcement for Friday
The
Florence
Police
Department will be participat-
ing in additional Oregon
Impact funded DUII enforce-
ment this Friday, April 20.
The Florence PD is remind-
ing residents that in every state
and the District of Columbia,
impaired driving is illegal.
Whether by drugs — legal or
illegal — alcohol, or a combi-
nation of both drugs and alco-

The Port of Siuslaw Board
of Commissioners invites
applications from residents
interested in serving on the
Port’s Budget Committee.
Interested persons should
obtain an application from
the Port of Siuslaw Office at
100 Harbor St., or from the
port’s website, www.portof
siuslaw.com. Applications
will be accepted until 5 p.m.,
Friday, March 30.
Applicants must be regis-
tered voters residing within
the Port of Siuslaw district.
The district boundary encom-
passes most of the Siuslaw
River watershed, including
the communities of Florence
and Dunes City and extend-
ing upriver to Mapleton,
Walton, Lorane and Blachly.
The Budget Committee is
a standing committee of five
members that sits jointly with
the Port Commission to pub-
licly review and revise the
annual budget. The Budget
Committee approves the
budget and tax levy. The
budget then goes to the Port
Commission to be adopted.
Committee members serve
three-year terms which
expire on June 30.
A Budget Committee
Member is expected to spend
up to 20 hours of their time.
That includes reviewing the
budget and meeting one to
three times from May
through June each year.
The committee may be
called to meet again during
the year in the event of a sig-
nificant budgetary change.

driver, their passengers and
other road users at risk.
In the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration’s
National Roadside Survey con-
ducted in 2013-14, some 20
percent of drivers surveyed
tested positive for potentially
impairing drugs.
Law enforcement is encour-
aging the public to work
together with officers to share
this life-saving message:
Impaired driving is illegal and
deadly.
The
Florence
Police
Department has specially
trained officers that will be on
the lookout for drug and/or
alcohol impaired drivers in
addition to normal patrols on
Friday.

SALEM — Governor Kate
Brown signed HB 4065 into
law Monday, approving legis-
lation that allows the state to
take stronger, quicker action
against both licensed and ille-
gal child care facilities.
Among the actions allowed
by the bill are significantly
higher penalties for those who
violate the law.
In addition to passing the
bill, the Oregon Legislature
approved Brown’s request for
nearly $2 million in funding to
increase staff in the Early
Learning Division to “address
safety and quality issues, and
to fund testing for lead in
drinking water at small child
care facilities,” said Brown.
The additional staffing is an
effort to reduce caseloads and
allow for more coordination
between the Early Learning
Division and the Oregon
Department
of
Human
Services on instances of child
abuse or neglect in child care
facilities.
“Oregon families deserve
safe and high-quality child
care regardless of where they
live or who they choose to care
for their children,” Brown said
on Monday. “HB 4065 and the
additional staffing funding
will help provide the state with
the tools and resources needed
to protect our youngest
Oregonians.
“We know there is more
work to do, and will continue
to focus on improving
Oregon’s system of early edu-
cation and care.”

those priorities should be.”
