“Bringing Columbia Home”

Michael Leinbach was the launch director of the
space shuttle program when Columbia disintegrated on
reentry before a nation’s eyes on Feb. 1, 2003. And it
was Mike Leinbach who would be a key leader in the
search and recovery effort as NASA, FEMA, the FBI,
the U.S. Forest Service and dozens more federal, state
and local agencies combed an area of rural east Texas
the size of Rhode Island for every piece of the shuttle
and her crew they could find.
Assisted by hundreds of volunteers, it would become
the largest ground search operation in U.S. history.

Architecture of Internment
The library is pleased to host a traveling exhibit
exploring Oregon’s relationship to the incarceration of
Japanese Americans and immigrants during World War
II. The display, which includes letters, documents,
images and more, will be at the library for only two
days, tomorrow and Friday, April 12 and 13.
Film to Highlight Undocumented Youth
The library will be showing the film “Papers: Stories
of Undocumented Youth” on Thursday, April 12, at 6
p.m.
The hour-long documentary explores the historical
and contemporary stories of young people without
papers — from Japanese immigrants to high school
students, from the 1940s to today.

Author Mel Gurtov to Speak
On Friday, April 13, at 4 p.m., join local author and
international diplomacy expert Dr. Mel Gurtov for
“Who Are We? America’s Problematic Treat-
ment of Immigrants.” From the internment of Japanese
Americans forward, Gurtov will speak about the
changing definitions of “American.”
The ABCs of Birds!
On Saturday, April 21, at 10 a.m., the Cascades
Raptor Center will present “Bring the Wild Alive” at
the library.
Following the presentation, the center will be having
an open house at the library where the public can see a
raptor and displays up close and ask questions about
our winged friends.
On Sunday, April 20, at 10 a.m., Siuslaw National
Forest ranger Vicki Penwell will present
“Birdwatching for Beginners” at the Siltcoos
Recreation Area.
All of the programs are free and open to the public,
but the program at Siltcoos does require a day-use fee
or appropriate recreation pass.
