T HANKFUL FOR CURRENT
C OUNTY C OMMISHIONER
I imagine some readers remember
when we were trying hard to get
Archie Knowles Park re-opened here
in Mapleton.
We really had our work cut out for
us because the Forest Service already
had plans for it and it wasn’t going to
continue being a park. Our community
needs tourist dollars because we have
no real family-wage jobs in our town
— and that park was important to us.
There were so many reasons to have
it there. It’s a beautiful place that we
worked hard to keep open. But we
needed somebody with clout — and
that’s where Jay Bozievich came in.
He accomplished things on our
behalf that we couldn’t have possibly
done alone. He made it happen for us.
Today, the county has the park and
it is better than ever. It would not have
happened without Commissioner
Bozievich taking the time to help us,
and we are thankful.
We are pretty small and insignifi-
cant in the scheme of things, but he
came aboard and saved our park. I
appreciate him and hope to see him
reelected.

G OOD PEOPLE AT LOCAL
GUN CLUB
I thought I would give my two cents
on all the gun talk going on around our
town and elsewhere.
We have a really great gun club
here. The Siuslaw Rod and Gun Club
has a nice club house, covered pistol
and rifle ranges, as well as a cowboy
action shooting range.
It’s a membership club with dues
that are reasonable to support its many
programs, including many that are
open to the public.
Folks there are always available to
answer questions.
Yes, I’m a lifetime member of the
NRA, along with a lot of our other
members who, like myself, also own
an AR-15 because they are great target
rifles.
We have a good group of people in
the club, so come on down and meet
them. Anyone here would make you
feel welcome.

Did you know Physicians for a
National Health Program, (PNHP) is a
non-profit research and educational
organization of 20,000 physicians,
medical students and health profes-
sionals who support single-payer
national health insurance?
These people are our country’s care
givers laboring in hospitals and clinics
in a system that all too often rewards
the bean counters and neglects the
plight of families finding themselves
facing medical bankruptcy.
While PNHP has its sights set on a
national plan for single payer health
care in the U.S., there are at least 20
states delving into creating a state ver-
sion that does away with needless
insurance industry involvement and
profit taking.
Oregon is one of those states. Its
energetic organization, Health Care
for All Oregon (HCAO.org), is point-
ing toward 2020 to get out the vote for
a citizen generated ballot measure cre-
ating a comprehensive, equitable,
affordable, publicly funded, high qual-
ity, universal health care system serv-
ing everyone in Oregon and eventual-
ly the U.S.
It’s high time for a change.
Let it begin here.
