B ACKSTREET G ALLERY The work of author Judy Fleagle, known as the Bridge Lady, and Meredith Draper, known as the Time-Piece Jeweler, will be spotlighted at Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St., in March. Their reception, spread with refreshments and music, will be held on March 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. After 22 years teaching ele- mentary school in California and 21 years as editor/staff writer for “Oregon Coast” and “Northwest Travel” magazines in Florence, Fleagle embarked on a third career in 2010. She has written four books: “Crossings: McCullough’s Coastal Bridges” (2011), “The Crossings Guide to Oregon’s Coastal Spans” (2013), “Around Florence” (2014) and “Devil Cat and Other Colorful Animals I Have Known” (2015). A fifth book mapping the unusual places along the coast will be available in 2019. Who could’ve imagined that Draper, who majored in busi- ness administration and minored in art, would later become the president of Backstreet Gallery Co-opera- tive and also a very versatile artist? After dabbling in clay, painting and free-form sculp- ture, Draper takes her altered art to refined jewelry she assembles from antique watch- es and unique treasures. She also weaves. Between her intri- cate fine art necklaces, pins, earrings and bracelets and col- orful woven scarves, one can pull together an elegant look to enhance any wardrobe choice. FRAAA Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) is honored to feature a special collection of artwork for sale from the late Henry Evans during the 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour on March 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. These prints were donated by Dean and Pat Hendricks, and proceeds from sales will go to various nonprofit organiza- tions. Evans began making botani- cal prints in 1958, depicting some 1,400 subjects in 31 years. Admired by art lovers and naturalists alike, Evans was a self-taught printer, botanist and artist, developing a unique style and technique. He drew directly from living subjects, and all subjects were portrayed life-size. Among numerous publica- tions, the artist’s most impor- tant books and portfolios include: “The State Flowers of the United States;” “Botanical Prints: with Excerpts from the Artist’s Notebooks;” and “California Wildflowers.” FRAA’s Art Center and Gallery is located at 120 Maple St. in Historic Old Town Florence. Henry Evans’ prints may be seen at www.henryevans.com. But he’s not in heaven either…yet.” He points out there is good news about the fact that people don’t transition at their last breath. “I used to believe peo- ple went to heaven at death,” explains Steward. “But after really looking into what the Bible, says I’ve found a better explanation of what happens, an explanation that a growing number of people around the world are rediscovering. “Bring a skeptical but open mind. We’ll look at a number of often overlooked biblical facts in hopes of restoring peo- ple’s understanding of what happens at death, and of God as fair, forgiving, loving and perfectly logical,” says Steward.. Steward’s presentation takes place Saturday, Marrch Kingsbury’s paintings are on display during the month of March at Oregon Pacific Bank on Highway 101 in Florence. Kingsbury lived in the Pacific Islands for 15 years, has crossed both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and lived on three sides of the Caribbean. He fell in love with the ocean, and his attempts to depict the surging surf and billowing clouds has yielded some great art over the years. His works are created in acrylics in the style of oils. He uses a variety of techniques. Kingsbury has been a mem- ber of several art associations, and is now a member of FRAA, where one can view more of his artwork.
