hosted this month by the
Florence
Regional
Arts
Alliance, located at 120 Maple
St., on Tuesday, March 6.
The evening will begin at
6:30 p.m.
The pubic is invited to par-
ticipate in the Florence Big
Wave Poetry sponsored event
with a favorite poem, story
and prose.

FACC to host talk from school
superintendent, board member
On Wednesday, March 7,
from 9 to 10:30 a.m., the
Florence Area Community
Coalition (FACC) will host
Andy Grzeskowiak, superin-
tendent of Siuslaw School
District and Suzanne Mann-
Heintz, president of the
Siuslaw Education
Foundation, to speak about
current and future projects and
events in local schools.
The Siuslaw School Board
and the superintendent have
established priorities in tech-
nology, graduation rates,
career and technical education
and facilities upgrades.
The Siuslaw Education
Foundation is working in con-
junction with the schools both
in Florence and Mapleton, to
raise funds to support these
education priorities.
The featured agency for this
month is KXCR Community
Radio. Participants are invited
to make donations to KXCR to
keep this valuable community
resource up and running.
KXCR offers commercial-
free radio to communities
throughout the Siuslaw region.
Some programs are pro-
duced locally; others are sub-
scribed to through networks of
public broadcasting agencies.
It takes about $20,000 per year
to keep KXCR on the air.
FACC hosts meetings on the
first Wednesday of each month
at the Siuslaw Public Library.
It also hosts an annual
Volunteer Recognition Event,
coming Wednesday, April 11,
from 1 to 3 p.m. at the
Florence Events Center.
This year, FACC celebrates
its 30th birthday. Plans are in
progress for the second
“Aging in Place Forum” on
June 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
at the Florence Events Center.

Three Rivers hosts Community Job Fair
Three Rivers Casino Resort
will be hosting the Third
Annual Community Job Fair
on Thursday, March 8, from 10
a.m to 3 p.m. This Community
Job Fair is free to participating
businesses and job seekers.
Last year’s event brought an
estimated 300 participants and
this year’s event plans to be
even bigger.

Tribes of Coos, Lower
Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians,
said, “We all know it can be
challenging for both businesses
and applicants to locate
resources and to apply for jobs.
This year’s Community Job
Fair will bring everyone
together with the common
goals of hiring and being
hired.”
This is an ideal opportunity
for businesses to reach out to
interested applicants and talk
with them in person before the
peak busy season. It is also a
chance for job seekers to bring
their resumes before a wide
variety of fields.

Historian to speak at library about Oregon writer Haycock
Siuslaw Public Library will
once again welcome historian
and author Richard Etulain to
the library on Friday, March 9,
beginning at 1 p.m. in the
Bromley Room at the main
branch in Florence.
Etulain will discuss his
newest book, “Ernest Haycock
and the Western,” in which the
author writes about the impor-
tance of Haycock’s contribu-
tion to Oregon’s literary histo-
ry.
Etulain has focused on the
history of the West for most of
his career. He is a professor
emeritus at the University of
New Mexico who has taught
history, English and American
Studies at a number of univer-
sities for over 40 years. He is
also the author of dozens of
history books and hundreds of
essays. In his most recent work
about
Haycock,
Etulain
explores the Oregon writer’s
contributions in the develop-
ment of the fictional Western
and traces the Haycock’s
ascending career from a
University of Oregon student
writer to his success as a fre-
quent and well-known contrib-
utor to popular magazines
including Collier’s and The
Saturday Evening Post.
Etulain explains that his
slide-illustrated talk about
Haycock “will draw the atten-
tion of listeners to one of
Oregon’s major writers and
cast light on earlier achieve-
ments in the state’s rich literary
history.”
Etulain, the son of a Basque
immigrant,
has
received
numerous awards for his work,
including the Caughey and
Western Heritage awards. He
has also been nominated for the
Pulitzer Prize.
Fellow historian, Glenda
Riley, said, “The magic of Dick
Etulain’s books are that they
combine solid history with fas-
cinating reading. Want to know
about the American West?
Etulain will make it live for
you.”
The accomplished author,
historian and editor currently
lives in Clackamas, Ore., with
his wife, Joyce, a retired chil-
dren’s librarian.
Besides “Ernest Haycock
and the Western,” Etulain’s
recent works include “The Life
and Legends of Calamity
Jane,” which was a Western
Writers of America Spur Award
winner in 2015, and, as co-
author, “U.S. Presidents Who
Shaped the American West.”
Join fellow history buffs,
especially those fond of the
Western genre and our state’s
literary history, for this extraor-
dinary opportunity to hear
Etulain share his expert insight
into one of Oregon’s major
writers and learn a bit about
Oregon’s rich literary history.
This program is free and
open to the public and will
appeal to everyone interested
in learning about Haycock’s
career and contributions to
Oregon literature.

able for purchase at the end of
the program.
