This Friday, March 2, at 3
p.m. in the Mapleton branch
library, Siuslaw Library Distirct
librarian Kevin Mittge will be
repeating his presentation of the
“Best Books of 2017” as select-
ed by patrons, staff and book
critics. This will be a fast-
paced review of the year’s best
books in 60 minutes with a
booklist of the reviewed titles
available.
A sneak preview: Among the
top books this past year are
“Lincoln in the Bardo” by
George Saunders and “Little
Fires Everywhere” by Celeste
Ng.
Hopefully, all those who
attend will get some ideas about
wonderful new books to
explore.
“T ALKING A BOUT D YING :”
A CONVERSATION PROGRAM
What do we think about when
we think of dying? When we
think about our own dying, what
do we want most?
Death is part of the human
experience; all of us have expe-
rienced loss, and all of us will
die one day. Yet conversations
about death and dying are diffi-
cult and often avoided even
with our closest family mem-
bers and friends.
This is the focus of “Talking
about Dying,” a free conversa-
tion with Bob Daley, this
Saturday, March 3, beginning at
1 p.m. in the library’s Bromley
Room.
This program is sponsored by
Oregon Humanities.
Talking about Dying discus-
sions are made possible thanks
to the generous support of the
WRG Foundation Fund of the
Oregon Community
Foundation. This conversation
provides an opportunity for par-
ticipants to hear perspectives
and ideas from fellow commu-
nity members.
Facilitators of Talking about
Dying discussions are trained
professionals working in the
fields of chaplaincy, counseling,
gerontology, facilitation and
hospice care around Oregon.
Bob Daley finds great fulfil-
ment in accompanying others
through life transitions. He
manages the Transitions and
Caregiver Support Program at
Lumina Hospice and Palliative
Care, formerly Benton Hospice,
is the current chair of his local
Senior Services Advisory
Council, and volunteers as a day
lead for Leadership Corvallis.
He has over ten years of facil-
itation experience in a variety of
settings and holds a master of
arts in teaching from Oregon
State University.
E RNEST H AYCOX AND
THE W ESTERN
Author and educator Richard
Etulain will be discussing his
latest book Ernest Haycox and
the Western on Friday, March 9,
at 1 p.m. in the library’s
Bromley Room.
Haycox was a noted Oregon
author who wrote fiction and
was especially known for his
westerns, several of which later
became films, such as his book
“Stage to Lordsburg,” which
became the classic film
“Stagecoach,” starring John
Wayne.
The
novel,
“Trouble
Shooter,” became the film
“Union
Pacific”
starring
Barbara Stanwyck and Joel
McCrea.
Etulain, a prize-winning his-
torian of the American West,
has visited the Siuslaw Public
Library before, presenting a full
weekend of discussions about
author Wallace Stegner as well
as discussing Abraham Lincoln
and his relationship to Oregon.
He has written over 50 books
and has served as president of
the Western Literature and
Western History Associations.

The Mapleton library is locat-
ed at 88148 Riverview Ave., in
the Lion’s Club Building. With
a nice view of the Siuslaw
River, it’s a wonderful place to
sit and enjoy a good book or
read the newspaper. If you

Soroptimists announce ‘Live Your Dream’ awards
Soroptimist International of
Florence (SIF) announced the
winners of the annual “Live
Your Dream Awards.”
This award is for women
who are head of household and
working to further their educa-
tion. Award winners who were
honored at the Jan. 10 meeting
were Jennifer Nelson, Cheryl
Wittmier and Michelle White.
Nelson has assisted at home-
births for over 20 years. She is
working to meet her long-term
dream of becoming a Certified
Professional Midwife through
the Birth Educator Program.
White’s goal is to complete a
bachelor’s degree in Clinical
Laboratory Science to become
a MLS. She has been serving
the local community as a mem-
ber of the Peace Health
Laboratory team for 17 years.
Wittmier is using this oppor-
tunity to increase her nursing
skills with Wound Care
Certification through the
Wound
Care
Education
Institute.
She has worked as a nurse at
Peace Health for over 5 years
and also volunteered as an
EMT.
The SIF are actively
involved in improving the lives
of women and girls in our local
community. Anyone interested

Entrepreneurship topic
of March City Club
On Friday, March 2, the
City Club of Florence will host
local restaurateur Marianne
Brisbane, who will speak
about entrepreneurship in
Florence.
Brisbane is well known in
Florence and in Old Town for
great food and high quality
service in her restaurants.
After leaving San
Francisco 22 years ago, she
established a string of thriving
restaurants in Florence, begin-
ning in 1996 with Lovejoy’s
Tea Shop. This was followed
by Waterfront Depot in 2004,
the Shed Bakery turned into
Le Bouchon Provisions, 1285
Restobar, and finally Spice,
where
she
introduced
Indonesian food from the
place she lived for quite some
time.
Brisbane displays the work
of her father at her latest
venue, the Waterfront Wine
Store and Food, which offers a
view of the river.
Brisbane is an example of a
highly successful entrepre-
neur in the Florence communi-
ty.
The City Club’s program,
which is open to the public,
will have its inaugural debut at
the Class Act Theatre (CAT),
hosted by its owners, David
and Rosemary Lauria, at 509
Kingwood St.
FloTones show ‘Music
Matters’ in May concerts
Music. It means a lot to
most of us. And to Florence’s
favorite jazz vocal ensemble,
music drives them to perform
as it has for a decade and a
half. In fact, they hold music
in such high regard that the
FloTones named their next
benefit
concert
“Music
Matters.”
Their last benefit before
Christmas raised more than
$1,300 for the Boys and Girls
Club of Western Lane County.
The beneficiary of “Music
Matters” will be the Siuslaw
Schools music programs.
“Music Matters” will occu-
py the Florence Events
Center’s flat floor for two per-
formances on Saturday and
Sunday, May 26 and 27. And
in a break from previous
FloTones performances, the
‘Tones will share the stage
with four talented school-kid
singers – “The CROW Kids”
and the very popular “Miles To
Go” jazz quartet.
Songs on the FloTones
playlist include the fan-
favorite “Begin the Beguine”
and new tunes, including
“Misty” and “For All We
Know.” The CROW Kids per-
formance will round out the
first half of the show.
After intermission, “Miles
To Go” will hold the stage
joined by popular vocalist
Maree Beers with a guest
appearance by teen singing
sensation Nyah Vollmer.
Tickets will be available
soon at $20 and $10 for stu-
dents.
Music matters to the
FloTones, the CROW Kids,
Miles To Go and the Siuslaw
Schools music programs. They
hope it also matters to the
community, and that people
will put this benefit concert on
their calendar.
