Siuslaw Steering Committee
makes recommendation to board
At the Feb. 14 Siuslaw
School Board meeting, mem-
bers heard a recommendation
from the Facilities Steering
Committee to hold a bond
election in November 2018.
The committee presented
the recommendation and gave
background of how they came
to their decision.
The board had initially been
considering a May 2018 bond
election.
The committee indicated
that through a series of stake-
holder meetings and having
had individual discussions
with community members,
that additional public engage-
ment would be valuable to
share the needs of the district
and to receive feedback from
the community.
Between the surveys and
meetings, a sizable portion of
the community has informa-
tion regarding school facility
needs, and much more of the
community must be reached
with the relevant details as part
of a successful information
campaign.
The school board ultimately
motioned to authorize the con-
tinuation of the Steering
Committee.
The board additionally rec-
ommended the Steering
Committee, administration
and the board engage in a for-
mal
public
engagement
process regarding facilities.

the City of Florence has created
an exciting new program to
enhance the beauty and livability
of our community by regularly
introducing original outdoor art
into Florence. This program,
called “Art Exposed — Dynamic
Public Art” provides a creative
outlet for artists to display their
work in five locations in the high
visibility amd high traffic area of
Historic Old Town Florence
along Bay Street.
The five locations selected for
art pieces are:
• Next to River Roasters
• In the Rain Garden at the
Interpretive Center
• The East Side of the
Interpretive Center
• Old Town Park
• Maple Street Park
Artists are encouraged to uti-
lize maximum creativity to offer
pieces specific to each location.
The goal is to provide visitors
and locals with interesting and
attractive artwork. The request
for applications went out on
Jan.7, and the deadline for
entries was Feb. 25. A decision
on the projects will be made the
week of March 19.
All these projects are moving
forward at an exciting pace, and
the committee encourages public
input. Community members are
invited to attend all meetings of
the Public Art Committee. A
schedule is available on the City
of Florence web site.
In addition, the Public Art
Committee will be providing
updates on a monthly basis.
