Book Review
“Clade”
By James Bradley
“Clade,” by James Bradley is a remarkable, unforgettable
story about a multi-generational family surviving in the face
of climate change and government collapse. On a beach in
Antarctica, scientist Adam Leith marks the passage of the
summer solstice, while back in Sydney, Australia, his partner
Ellie waits for the results of her latest round of IVF treat-
ment. That result, when it comes, will change both their lives
and propel them into a future neither would have predicted.
In a collapsing England, Adam will battle to survive an
apocalyptic storm. Against a backdrop of growing civil
unrest back home in Australia, Ellie will discover a strange
affinity with beekeeping. In the aftermath of a pandemic, a
young man finds solace in building virtual recreations of the
dead. And new connections will be formed from the most
unlikely beginnings, tying the first characters, Adam and
Ellie, to the later generations in the story.
New Scientist reviewed the book and called it “a beauti-
fully written meditation on climate collapse, concentrating
on three generations of an Australian family. [Author]
Bradley skillfully evokes the particularity of lived experi-
ence, and the novel is full of vivid little moments, although
its real triumph is in setting these in their large context: a
world wrecked by storms and floods, changes in vegetation
and the collapse of bird and bee populations.”
Anyone interested in one possible future with the results
of climate change, for good or for ill, will enjoy “Clade.”
John Quay Heritage Players
Come meet some of the early pioneers of and settlers of
Florence and the lower Siuslaw area, when the John Quay
Heritage Players visit the library on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 1
p.m.
Among the visitors will be Christina Kyle (played by Cathy
Dupont), Lily Cox Hurd (Annie Schmidt), Clara Gamble
Hering (Alyson Scott), Elizabeth Knowles (Diane Neale),
Harvey Hanson (Dorland Neale), and Dan Johnson, also
known as Indian Dan (David Dumas).
The goal of the Heritage Players is to reflect early Florence
from a diversity of viewpoints. Through personal monologues
of the early settlers and dramatizations of fact-based incidents,
the group hopes to entertain as well as educate about the early
pioneer experience. The library is pleased to host the Heritage
Players in this free program open to the general public.
