Siuslaw grapplers show well at Senior Night Duals
B Y N ED H ICKSON
Siuslaw News
Viking wrestlers had little trouble
with opponents from North Bend and
South Umpqua during last Friday’s
Senior Night Duals at Siuslaw High
School.
The Viks handed the Bulldogs a lop-
sided 52-6 loss, and easily defeated the
Lancers in a 41-12 victory.
In the opening match against North
Bend, Siuslaw’s Brady Libby pinned
Ethan Ingram in 3:45 at 113-lbs. After
a win-by-forfeit for Richard Huff at
120 lbs., Elijah LaCosse defeated
North Bend’s Liam Buskerud in an 11-
3 major decision at 126 lbs. to keep the
Viks’ momentum rolling.
At 132 lbs, Gavin Fletcher pinned
the Bulldogs’ Eric Monsebroten in 52
seconds.
Both teams took a win in the next
two rounds by forfeit, followed by
double forfeits at 152 lbs and 160 lbs.
At 170 lbs., Siuslaw’s Riley
Jennings pinned Kaleb Hoffman in
1:46. The Vikings’ winning streak con-
tinued with a pin from Christian
Newlan over North Bend 182-pounder
Cutter Woodworth in 2:30.
In just 1:25, Luis Infante-Marquez
pinned Zachary Lester of North Bend
for the win at 195 lbs.
After a double forfeit at 220 lbs.,
Siuslaw’s Matthew Horrillo won by
forfeit at 285 lbs.
In the second match-up of the night,
Siuslaw won seven out of nine match-
es, including pins from Huff and
Horrillo, and a 20-3 technical fall for
Jennings.
The evening recognized Siuslaw’s
three seniors, Jay Goldblatt, Sal Sierra
and Huff, who each made their final
appearance on their home floor at
Glenn Butler Court.
Siuslaw will return to the mats this
weekend, Friday, Feb. 9, and Saturday,
Feb. 10, during the district meet at
Hidden Valley High School in Grants
Pass.
The winners of the district meet will
qualify for regionals and a chance to
compete at the state tournament later
this month in Portland.
District matches begin at 9 a.m.
Friday, with qualifying wrestlers
advancing to the semi-finals and finals
matches on Saturday.

With 4 minutes remaining before the
half, the Viking boys basketball team
was within 2 points of the Pirates, 16-
18, after a 3-pointer from senior guard
John Rollin.
Unfortunately, it proved to be about
as close as Siuslaw would get to sink-
ing the undefeated Pirates (6-0).
In the opening period, Siuslaw was
able to hold Marshfield to just 9 points,
rallying from a 2-9 deficit on shooting
from seniors Kyle King and Jake
Hickson, along with a 3-pointer from
junior Dylan Wynn at the buzzer to cut

the Pirates’ lead to 9-6 heading into the
second quarter.
The Vikings’ defense continued to
limit the Pirates to single-shot opportu-
nities through the first half of the quar-
ter as King, Hickson, Rollin and senior
Jared Brandt worked the glass.

W INTER STEELHEAD :
WATER DEPENDENT
This time of year, water
conditions for winter steel-
head fishing can vacillate
between too low and clear,
and too high and muddy.
Successful anglers will:
1) adjust their gear and
tackle for current condi-
tions, and/or
2) be ready to hit the
water when water condi-
tions improve — usually
once water levels start to
drop after a good rain.
