SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 2018 Film screening to raise funds for local immigrants Florence ORganizes (FOR) Human Rights Team will be hosting a fundraising event for local DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) immi- grant youth at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at City Lights Cinemas. The event will be held in conjunction with the showing of “Dolores,” an inspiring doc- umentary about Dolores Huerta, United Farm Workers organizer and women’s rights advocate. Food from Rosa’s Restaurant, Ixtapa, Los Compadres and Traveler’s Cove will be served with a suggested $5 to 10 donation. Dunes City names volunteer of the year In a special ceremony held in December at Dunes City Hall, Mayor Robert Forsythe presented the city's 2017 Volunteer of the Year award to Mr. and Mrs. Ken Platt. Ken and his wife, Wan, came to Dunes City from the San Francisco Bay Area where he was a partner in a commercial construction venture. Prior to that, Ken served in the US Air Force as a flight engineer and, after leaving the Air Force, he worked for the Air Research Company doing research on laser and elec- tron beams. Ken retired from the commercial arena in 1991. He and Wan moved to Dunes City in 2004. Ken has a long history of volunteerism. Chuck Willer to speak at library Jan. 31 Join Community Rights Lane County for a presentation from Chuck Willer, Director of the Coast Range Association. The presentation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., in the Bromely Room of the Siuslaw Public Library. Willer will provide new information on Wall Street “owned” Western Oregon pri- vate forests and how that own- ership affects management objectives. “My work in economics strives to daylight the role of money and banks in the econo- my through dynamic analysis, said Willer. The Coast Range Association was formed in 1991 and works to defend the region’s interests, protect its natural and cultural endow- ments and restore its rivers, wetlands and forests. SHS senior Isacc Griffes Earns Eagle Scout Isaac Griffes earned his Eagle Scout rank on Tuesday, Nov. 16, by passing his Eagle Board of Review, the final requirement for the rank. Griffes, son of Rob and Annette Griffes, began his scouting career in first grade, as a Tiger Cub in Cub Scout Pack 777. He is a member of Florence Evangelical Church, and a senior at Siuslaw High School. Griffes will receive rank insignias and recognitions at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor, on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Florence Evangelical Church, 1318 Rhododendron Drive.
