“Salt Houses”
by Hala Alyan
A dazzling new literary voice,
Hala Alyan, in her book “Salt
Houses,” tells the story of a fam-
ily caught between present and
past, between displacement and
home. On the eve of her daugh-
ter Alia’s wedding, Salma reads
the girl’s future in a cup of cof-
fee dregs. She sees an unsettled
life for Alia and her children;
she also sees travel and luck.
While she chooses to keep her
predictions to herself that day,
they will all soon come to pass
when the family is uprooted in
the wake of the Six-Day War of
1967.
Salma is forced to leave her
home in Nablus; Alia’s brother
gets pulled into a politically mil-
itarized world he can’t escape;
and Alia and her gentle-spirited
husband move to Kuwait City,
where they reluctantly build a
life with their three children.
When Saddam Hussein
invades Kuwait in 1990, Alia
and her family once again lose
their home, their land, and their
story as they know it, scattering
to Boston, Paris, Beirut and
beyond. Soon Alia’s children
begin families of their own,
once again navigating the bur-
dens (and blessings) of assimila-
tion in foreign cities.
Lyrical and heartbreaking,
“Salt Houses” is a remarkable
debut novel that seeks to con-
front the most complicated of all
truths: you can’t go home again.
Living Voices:
Northwest Passages
This Sunday, Jan. 28, in a pro-
gram jointly sponsored by the
Siuslaw Genealogical Society
and the Siuslaw Public Library,
Seattle-based Living Voices will
be presenting “Northwest
Passages,” the story of a
Swedish immigrant to the
Northwest at the turn of the 20th
century.
In “Northwest Passages,” wit-
ness the dynamically changing
Northwest at the turn of the cen-
tury. The expansion of the rail-
road, the discovery of gold,
labor struggles, and world war
— these are the passages experi-
enced by a young Swedish
immigrant and her community,
as she adjusts to life in a new
ethnically diverse community.
The free event will be at 2
p.m. in the Bromley Room.
Living Voices is a Seattle-
based regional and national
touring educational theater com-
pany, producing 12 different

original shows in ongoing reper-
tory, with a focus on social jus-
tice, racial diversity and cultural
responsiveness.
Living Voices creates dynam-
ic, interactive multi-media per-
formances to bring life to histo-
ry. Using historical perspectives
based on real people and events,
the Living Voices technique
combines live performance with
video, audio, visual aids and dis-
cussion.
Archival film footage and
photographs, blended with
audio and presented in synchro-
nization with a live solo actor,
give the audience a chance to
experience how the world
looked, sounded and felt during
a significant time in history, and
to consider its relevance to their
own lives.
Mapleton Branch
The Mapleton library is locat-
ed at 88148 Riverview Ave., in
the Lion’s Club Building. With a
nice view of the Siuslaw River,
it’s a wonderful place to sit and
enjoy a good book or read the
newspaper. The library also has
books, magazines, DVDs and
videos, recorded books, internet
computers, wireless internet and
more. Hours are Tuesday
through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.
Museum’s Heritage Players bring local history to life

he Knights of Columbus Assembly from St
Mary’s, Our Lady of the Dunes, contributed
$500 each to two tremendous charities on
Friday. The first charity is “Food Backpack for
Kids,” an all-volunteer program that provides food
to “at risk for hunger” children from Siuslaw and
Mapleton schools. This program supplies three
nutritional meals for Saturdays and Sundays for
approximately 100 children who night otherwise go
hungry. The second charity is Florence Area
Veterans Relief Agency (FAVRA) that assists military
veterans that could use financial assistance and
those who qualify for limited emergency stop-gap
funding for food, utilities, transportation and med-
ical needs. “We particularly appreciate the fact that
we have the opportunity to help those in our own
town”, said a spokesman from the Knights.

was entertained and informed
by several early Siuslaw area
settlers on Jan. 15.

Each provided vignettes
from their early days in and
near Florence.
Of particular interest to the
residents were photos of the
Kyle Building at different time
periods, as well as the early
touring car used by the Kyles
when they travelled between
Florence and Long Beach,
Calif.
Several of the residents who
were from the area reminisced
about the Hurd Mansion, which
sat on a hill behind the Kyle
Building (now the Bridgewater
Restaurant), as well as the ren-
aissance of Old Town and the
groups that made that happen.
